Systematic protection calls for interdisciplinary thinking

The term 'intangible cultural heritage' has gradually entered the public eye, from videos of young people 'hand rubbing' intangible cultural heritage becoming popular on the internet, to multiple universities offering intangible cultural heritage majors. Behind the emergence and increasing popularity of intangible cultural heritage, there is a continuous deepening of people's understanding of the concept of intangible cultural heritage. In the more than 20 years since joining the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, China's innovative iteration in the theory of intangible cultural heritage protection has been a process of continuously integrating Chinese experience and wisdom into specific intangible cultural heritage protection practices, from the initial rescue protection to authenticity protection, production protection, and now systematic protection. Intangible cultural heritage has unique value and positioning in traditional Chinese culture. From the Hundred Schools of Thought to Tang and Song poetry, the main carrier is Chinese characters; From folklore to local opera, the main carrier is language, which is what we call oral culture. Intangible cultural heritage combines these two characteristics. It is precisely based on the understanding of its laws that systematic protection has become the keyword in the current field of intangible cultural heritage. The emergence and development of intangible cultural heritage are closely related to the social, cultural, and natural environment of specific regions. Systematic protection is a manifestation of respecting the inherent laws of intangible cultural heritage, and it is also the logical starting point of intangible cultural heritage protection. It requires us to pay attention to the overall characteristics of intangible cultural heritage and the integrity of protection measures, in order to achieve a balance between intangible cultural heritage protection and economic, social, ecological, and cultural development. The systematic protection of intangible cultural heritage calls for interdisciplinary thinking. Intangible cultural heritage projects include categories such as folk literature, traditional music, traditional dance, traditional drama, and folk customs, which are interdisciplinary and cross disciplinary in nature. For example, traditional drama includes folk cultural elements such as literature, music, art, and traditional sports, while folk customs encompass rich content such as social customs and etiquette. The integration of art and science is gradually becoming a trend, and intangible cultural heritage carrying rich historical and traditional cultural elements urgently needs digital technology empowerment. From the perspective of protection and research methods, understanding the intangible cultural heritage cannot be separated from field investigations, which involve professional techniques such as oral history interviews, data archive collection and organization, and require the comprehensive use of research methods from disciplines such as history, folklore, and even experimental archaeology. The revitalization of intangible cultural heritage involves disciplines such as informatics, communication studies, museum studies, and design studies. The construction of traditional folk crafts often requires the use of knowledge and technology in fields such as chemistry, physics, metallurgy, and smelting techniques. Only with interdisciplinary thinking can practitioners have a comprehensive understanding of intangible cultural heritage and related cultural systems, and carry out protection and research in an orderly manner. In recent years, several universities have launched pilot projects for the construction of undergraduate and graduate disciplines in intangible cultural heritage, cultivating composite talents through interdisciplinary integration. Nanjing University of the Arts and other universities have established undergraduate programs in intangible cultural heritage, while Tianjin University and other universities have set up specialized disciplines in intangible cultural heritage protection at the graduate level... A group of interdisciplinary and composite talents have emerged, providing ample confidence and vitality for the inheritance of intangible cultural heritage. Rooted in practical soil and embedded in daily life, as a living cultural organism, intangible cultural heritage presents people's thoughts, actions, and abilities. Looking towards the future, by opening up a new perspective on systematic protection with interdisciplinary thinking and stimulating traditional charm with the vitality of the times, we will definitely be able to make intangible cultural heritage shine even more enchanting.
