New technology toolbox for ecological restoration in China
2026-06-04
The Ministry of Natural Resources, the State Forestry and Grassland Administration, and the China Geological Survey recently jointly released the "List of Innovative and Applicable Technologies for Ecological Restoration (Third Batch)". This is the work practice of empowering ecological restoration through technological innovation during the 15th Five Year Plan period. It is the first ecological restoration "technical toolbox" jointly created by "one department and two bureaus", and also a new achievement of cross departmental and cross regional collaboration. This public solicitation is aimed at the whole country. After independent application, preliminary evaluation, comprehensive evaluation, social publicity and other procedures, 35 technologies have been finally selected for the third batch of ecological restoration innovation applicable technology list, covering the top ten ecological restoration scenarios. Specifically, it includes 8 fields of forest, grassland, wetland, and desert ecological restoration, 5 fields of marine ecological restoration, 2 fields of water ecological restoration, 5 fields of mine ecological restoration, 1 field of degraded land ecological restoration and management, 4 fields of alien invasive species management and pest control, 1 field of ancient and famous tree protection, 1 field of ecosystem carbon sink, 6 fields of natural ecological monitoring and evaluation, and 2 fields in other areas. The 35 technologies selected this time cover different types of ecological restoration scenarios, which have been tested through engineering practice and are equivalent to providing "toolkits" for different regions and types of ecological restoration. During the 15th Five Year Plan period, China's ecological restoration will pay more attention to systematic governance, precise restoration, collaborative integration, and improving quality and efficiency. For the innovation of ecological restoration technology, the Ministry of Natural Resources, the State Forestry and Grassland Administration, and the China Geological Survey have stated that they will focus on three aspects of work: first, to make useful technologies "usable". Publicize and promote the application of ecological restoration projects to the society, guiding localities to prioritize the use of advanced and applicable technologies throughout the entire process of design, implementation, acceptance, monitoring, and evaluation. Incorporate the list into the "one map" of natural resource management and national spatial planning, establish communication channels between technology holders, industry regulatory departments, academic associations, and actual demanders, and ensure that good technologies are truly implemented and effective. The second is to increase the number of technical toolboxes. Continuously collecting and updating ecological restoration technologies, dynamically optimizing the content of the directory, accelerating the development of supporting technical standards and specifications, forming a technical support system of "directory+standard+case", promoting the transformation of ecological restoration technology from "single point breakthrough" to "system integration", and from "traditional means" to "intelligent precision", forming an ecological restoration technology system covering all elements, chains, and regions, and enhancing the modernization level of ecological restoration governance. The third is to bring technology collaborative innovation to life. Encourage and support scientific and technological research and development in the field of ecological restoration, focus on key technical challenges, organize joint research and development, make good use of advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence, and develop a batch of original and leading technologies. Encourage local innovative practices, summarize replicable and promotable restoration models, and further enhance the independent innovation capability in the field of ecological restoration.
