The of this phenomenon is no accident. Living in an era of information explosion, faced with massive amounts of text, fragmented time, and multiple pressures, people are more eager than ever efficiently screen, orderly extract, and quickly understand. It is precisely driven by such practical needs that AI-assisted reading has rapidly become popular
It should be noted that AI-assisted reading indeed has its positive value. It can extract main ideas, explain, organize logic, and supplement background information, offering clear advantages in areas such as information retrieval, knowledge guidance, and learning assistance, thereby effectively saving time and improving processing efficiency.
, reading has never been just a process of "extracting information." Especially for literary classics, historical works, philosophical texts, and theoretical articles, their value lies not only in "what said," but more so in "how it is developed," "why it is expressed this way," as well as the emotional layers, intellectual tension, and aesthetic meaning contained within. valuable reading often occurs in the process of not rushing to a conclusion: spending time with the text, chewing over it repeatedly, constantly revising one's understanding, and continuously enriching's feelings. Precisely for this reason, the more popular AI-assisted reading becomes, the more the value of slow reading is highlighted.
So-called slow reading is just about slowing down the pace, but is a reading method that emphasizes deep immersion and active thinking. It requires readers to linger in the text, savor the language, analyze the structure and continuously generate richer insights through repeated reading. For slow reading, the focus is not just on obtaining answers, but more on forming judgments through reading; not just on quickly knowing the, but on constructing oneself in dialogue with the text. Many important reading gains are not "summarized," but gradually grow through close reading, re-reading, and reflection.
the perspective of reading mechanisms, AI-assisted reading and slow reading are not naturally opposed, but they do point to two different cognitive paths. If the two can be reasonably combined, could complement each other; but if their use is unbalanced, especially when AI summaries replace reading the original text, AI conclusions squeeze out independent thinking, and AI "reading companions" evolve AI "reading substitutes," the internal structure of reading will undergo profound changes.
The risk brought about by this imbalance is first reflected in the weakening of reading subjectivity. Reading is a highly individualized mental activity. Different readers facing the same text often form their own paths of understanding based on different experiences. However, AI-generated summaries, guides, and analyses often standardization and generalization, providing a "pre-processed" framework of understanding. If readers rely on this framework for a long time, they are likely to accept a preset conclusion before directly the text, thereby narrowing the space for autonomous feeling and independent judgment.
Secondly, the risk is reflected in the weakening of deep thinking abilities. Reading complex texts is, in itself, a form of training. Whether following the development of an argument or appreciating the subtle foreshadowing in a literary narrative, readers need to mobilize their attention, memory, associative thinking, and analytical skills complete cognitive processing in a seemingly slow process. It is precisely in this process that a person's abilities for abstract generalization, logical reasoning, and value judgment are exercised. If one relies heavily on AI to directly provide answers, extract conclusions, and generate viewpoints, the thinking labor that originally belonged to the reader will be compressed or even omitted.
Thirdly, the is also reflected in the loss of aesthetic experience. Literary reading is important not only because it conveys knowledge, but more importantly because it enriches the inner world and enhances the capacity for through its unique linguistic forms, narrative rhythms, emotional organization, and imagery construction—experiencing the essence of a poem, the atmosphere of an essay, the echoes of fate in a... AI can hardly replace the reader's firsthand experience of those subtle and authentic emotional touches during reading.
The popularization of AI-assisted reading may also drive the reading to continuously shift towards "lightweighting," "instant gratification," and "conclusion-driven" directions. From short-video book summaries to graphic-text book breakdowns, and then intelligent summaries and automatic notes, reading content is increasingly fragmented into knowledge bits that are easier to disseminate and consume. Complete reading, sustained focus, and patient thinking are becoming scarce abilities.Of course, pointing out these problems is not to deny the positive significance of AI-assisted reading. Rather, it is to remind us: when facing reading materials that require immersive engagement, is necessary to return the true process of understanding to the readers themselves. Sometimes, fast is actually a form of slow; sometimes, slow can also be a form of fast.
