The special inspection of zongzi (sticky rice dumplings) before the Dragon Boat Festival yielded satisfactory results

2026-06-17

To effectively safeguard food safety during the Dragon Boat Festival and create a secure, trustworthy consumption environment, the State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) launched a nationwide special inspection of zongzi (sticky rice dumplings). The inspection results indicate that the overall quality and safety status of zongzi is satisfactory. This special sampling campaign covered all 31 provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities across China, targeting key business venues such as supermarkets, pastry shops, wholesale markets, and restaurants, as well as online platforms including Meituan, Taobao, and JD.com. A total of 1,167 batches of zongzi and raw glutinous rice were randomly sampled, encompassing widely distributed and high-volume brands like Wufangzhai, Sanquan, Siann, Beijing Daoxiangcun, Yuanzu, and Zhiweiguan. The inspection focused on additives of public concern, including preservatives, sweeteners, and colorants; microbial indicators such as Staphylococcus aureus, total plate count, and coliforms; and quality metrics like peroxide value. Additionally, raw glutinous rice was tested for pollutants (lead, cadmium, etc.) and mycotoxins. One batch of restaurant-made zongzi was found to exceed the permitted scope of sweetener use (sodium benzoate), while no不合格 samples were detected in the raw glutinous rice. For the non-compliant samples identified, SAMR has urged local regulatory authorities to conduct verification and disposal measures, reinforcing the primary responsibility of food producers and operators. The agency is committed to protecting the “safety of people’s food” during the festival. (The Watchtower New Era)
