The Dragon Boat Festival holiday is approaching in 2026, and the cultural and tourism market is experiencing its last peak of short holiday travel in the first half of the year. Based on data and predictions from multiple online travel platforms, the popular forms of tourism during this year's Dragon Boat Festival holiday include folk experiences, summer retreats, and small town leisure, with increasingly diverse consumer formats.

Loong Boat Competition Enlightens the Enthusiasm of the Dragon Boat Festival "Integration of Race and Tourism"

Loong Boat rowing is an indispensable traditional event of the Loong Boat Festival. According to Ctrip's data, "Loong Boat" related searches increased by 41.3% month on month in the past week. According to the travel data of the same trip, the search for hotels around well-known Loong Boat event venues such as Guangzhou and Foshan has soared by more than 210%.

It is understood that 208 Loong Boat activities and 547 competitions will be held in Guangdong from June to July, among which the dragon boat drifting competition in Diejiao, Foshan is very eye-catching. The four main races will be held from June 19 to 22, and the 25 meter long dragon boat will drift rapidly in the 3-8 meter wide river channel, which is very ornamental. On June 27th, overseas teams from New Zealand, Australia, France, and other countries will also participate in the war for the first time. According to data from the Mafengwo tourism platform, the competition has driven a 158% surge in search popularity for the small village of Diejiao.

Today's Loong Boat Race has upgraded from a simple "onlooker on the shore" to a diversified and immersive folk experience. In addition to hosting the event, Diejiao in Foshan also launched the "Diejiao Three Treasures" souvenirs - Dragon Boat Rice, Dragon Boat Cake, and Dragon Boat Tea, replicating the old taste of sailors who used to satisfy their hunger on the water. In Fuzhou, Puxia River Loong Boat Theme Park will welcome 63 teams to participate in the boat race. The theme fair of "Fu Shui, Fu Chuan, Fu Qi Lai" will also be available. The audience can enjoy the intangible cultural heritage performances such as Fu Chuan model, lacquer painting, Fujian Opera, and experience the Dragon Boat Festival customs such as wrapping Zongzi and weaving colorful ropes. Sichuan and Chongqing jointly held the Loong Boat Festival, promoted the event as "National Loong Boat Linkage", and created N supporting scenes, such as intangible cultural heritage interaction, water sports, and global marketing, so as to achieve the full coverage of the integrated business model of "competition, exhibition, travel, shopping, and entertainment".

Summer vacations and small town tours are widely popular, with novel gameplay and a sense of relaxation that has become popular

As the summer solstice approaches and temperatures gradually rise, going to cities with cool climate and high forest coverage to escape the heat or play in the water has become a popular choice for many people. According to Ctrip's forecast data, at the beginning of the Dragon Boat Festival, there is a significant increase in searches and hotel bookings related to "summer escape". The number of forest health care visits in fifth tier cities increased by 11.5% year-on-year, far exceeding the growth rate in first tier cities. The top 10 popular destinations for health preservation in Treasure Forest include Qinhuangdao, Yili, Dali, Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, and other places, distributed in the three major forest resource rich areas of Northeast, Southwest, and Northwest.

Some unique and interesting gameplay with local characteristics are also popular among the public. According to the Mafengwo tourism platform, the "new gameplay" with the fastest increase in popularity during the Dragon Boat Festival has seen a 67% increase in popularity for the "Wonang Drift" (gentle water drifting) at Maoershan in Guilin, Guangxi, and a 59% increase in popularity for the underground river drifting at Huangheying Cave in Anshun, Guizhou. The search popularity of keywords such as "niche destinations" on the platform has increased by 143%. Among them, border towns such as Yining, Tengchong, and Yanji have seen an average increase of 82% in popularity recently due to their unique border customs, cool summer climate, and cost-effective consumption.

During the three-day holiday, there is a significant proportion of local and surrounding tourists. Among them, some young people choose to go to relaxed small towns that are 2-3 hours' drive away from the core cities for an efficient "self charging". The top 10 small cities in the 2026 Dragon Boat Festival "Go to Ban Flavor" statistics by Tongcheng Travel include Chengde, Huzhou, Shaoxing, Xinzhou, etc. They are no longer traditional tourist cities, but living places that can provide a complete experience of "craftsmanship, vegetarian food, slow walking, and good sleep".

Family travel remains the mainstay of travel, with concentrated release of student travel demand

Family travel remains the main force for this holiday trip. According to data from Fliggy Travel, more than 50% of parent-child families travel. Popular theme parks such as Shanghai Legoland Resort, Hong Kong Ocean Park, and Oriental Salt Lake City have doubled their bookings year-on-year due to their rich exhibition and performance activities. The Tongcheng Travel Report also shows that during the Dragon Boat Festival, the proportion of parent-child travel orders exceeded 50% overall, and the search popularity of one-day tour products including intangible cultural heritage handicrafts, natural science popularization and other interactive research and learning increased by 130% month on month.

The tourism demand of the student group is also concentrated and released during this holiday. Around the Dragon Boat Festival this year, the national college entrance examination and university "exam week" have gradually come to an end, coinciding with graduation season. This type of itinerary places particular emphasis on comfort and emotional experience, with inquiries from summer resorts such as Ulan Butong, Nalati, and Changbai Mountain leading the way.

During the Dragon Boat Festival, there will be a lot of rain, so be cautious when traveling to mountainous areas, river valleys, and waterside areas

China Weather Network has released a 2026 national weather map for the Dragon Boat Festival holiday. The map shows that there will be more rainfall in China during this year's holiday, with heavy rainfall in northern Jiangnan, Jianghuai, Guizhou, Guangxi, and other areas. There will be frequent showers or thunderstorms in Northeast and North China, accompanied by strong convection. Only Xinjiang, Gansu, Hainan Island and other areas have scarce rainfall and need to guard against high temperatures or hot weather.

During the Loong Boat Festival holiday, short trips, Loong Boat races and other activities increased, but according to the forecast of the Central Meteorological Observatory, from June 19 to 21, there will be heavy rainfall in northern Jiangnan, Jianghuai, Guizhou, Guangxi and other places.
