The external merchandise trade value statistics released by the Census and Statistics Department of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government on the 15th show that the overall export and import volume of goods in Hong Kong in August 2026 increased by 28.6% and 34.6% respectively year-on-year, continuing to maintain double-digit growth.
Statistics show that the overall export and import prices of goods in August increased by 18.7% and 18% year-on-year, respectively. In the first 8 months, the overall export and import volume of goods in Hong Kong increased by 29.1% and 30% respectively year-on-year, and the overall export and import prices of goods increased by 10.1% and 9.8% respectively year-on-year.
During an interview with China News Service, Hong Kong Legislative Council member in the import and export sector, Chung Chi fung, pointed out that statistical data shows a trend of "both quantity and price rising", and Hong Kong's foreign commodity trade demonstrates high resilience.
In the face of the uncertainty of the external environment and the pressure of rising import costs, Zhong Qifeng called on the industry to actively deepen the supply chain connection with countries jointly building the "the Belt and Road" to spread risks.
Zhong Qifeng also suggested that the SAR government increase its support for small and medium-sized enterprises to cope with cost pressures and financing difficulties. He believes that the SAR government should make good use of Hong Kong's unique advantages under the "One Country, Two Systems" policy, accelerate the construction of Hong Kong into a "global high value-added supply chain service center", and better integrate and serve the overall development of the country.
