China has strengthened its "most rigorous" standards barrier, having issued a total of 1,775 national food safety standards to ensure that every stage from farm to table is governed by clear regulations. The country is also actively promoting the application of digital food labels to make food information more accessible and efficient to obtain.
This information was obtained by reporters on October 18 at the National Health Commission's thematic event for the 2026 National Food Safety Publicity Week, which was held under the theme "Upholding Virtue and Abiding by Law, Sharing Food Safety – Deepening Full-Chain Regulation."
A responsible official from the Food Division of the National Health Commission stated that China continues to strengthen risk monitoring and assessment, promptly identify food safety hazards, enhance risk warning and alerts, and safeguard the first line of defense against diseases entering through the mouth. In addition, food safety and nutrition are being advanced in tandem: guidance on diets for key groups such as students and the elderly is being strengthened; 11 dietary care guidelines have been issued, covering issues such as obesity among children and adolescents; and concepts of rational diet—such as "reducing oil, increasing beans, and adding milk" and "consuming more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and aquatic products"—are being widely promoted to foster scientific eating habits.
