Cultural China Tour · Intangible Cultural Heritage Year in the Camera | Nanjian Yi Ethnic Group Jumping Vegetables and Dancing Chinese New Year

2025-02-10

During the Chinese New Year, Nanjian Yi Autonomous County in Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province is bustling with activity. Local villagers held a banquet under the fiery red lanterns. With the sound of gongs, drums, and suona horns, vegetable jumping performers carried trays on their heads, bit the corners of the table, and flipped and turned three times... They danced and brought Yi cuisine to the table amidst the music. Yi ethnic group vegetable dancing, also known as "vegetable lifting dance", was selected as a representative project of national intangible cultural heritage in 2008. It is a ceremonial folk dance that originated from ancient rituals and has long been passed down in the Nanjian Yi ethnic region. When local Yi people hold banquets and serve dishes, they dance this dance to respect guests and increase the festive atmosphere. Dancers dance on trays, with a focus on rotation, sometimes vigorous and sometimes graceful. Nowadays, there are vegetable jumping teams in every village of Nanjian County, where tourists can immerse themselves in the Yi ethnic customs. The integration of culture and tourism not only promotes the protection of intangible cultural heritage, but also injects vitality into rural revitalization. (New Society)
