What should students be like in the AI era

2025-02-10

Every era has its own "student portrait", which is expressed not only in the text of national education policies, defining talent standards and clarifying training objectives, but also in popular folk education language, expressing parents' wishes and expectations for what kind of person their children will become, and depicting the spiritual appearance of their children in the future. From a sociological perspective, I am more inclined to agree with the view that educational catchphrases may be educational concepts that have had an actual impact in an era, and are value judgments that truly drive educational choices. It is often mentioned, conveying a broad consensus on educational concepts; From the bottom of my heart, I demonstrate a deep understanding of educational behavior. 'Farming, reading, and passing on the family' is a popular educational term in the agricultural era. People believe that farming skills and reading abilities are the key qualities for future family members to continue their lineage. Whether children work in the fields or become officials in the future, they must lay a foundation based on these qualities and not be left without both ends. Later on, for a long time, the saying "Learning mathematics, physics, and chemistry well is not afraid to travel around the world" became popular. People believed that as long as they learned the basic knowledge of natural sciences, they could hold a "passport" to the future society. At that time, the portrait of students' future should be classified as specialized talents in science, technology, and other fields. The future society is uncertain, and it seems uncertain what kind of "passport" one can hold to reach the future. So, what should be the image of students in the era of artificial intelligence (AI)? This is not only an educational question, but also a question of the times. My understanding is that the AI era is a time when machines are constantly becoming more advanced and intelligent. If you want to always stand in front of AI and be its master, you need to constantly amplify and strengthen the concept of 'big capital people'. Capitalized people possess excellent personalities, and cultivating excellent personalities is not about training knowledge and skills that are destined to be replaced by AI, but about focusing on developing noble qualities such as kindness and love, compassion and kindness, courage and perseverance, empathy and sense of responsibility, imagination and creativity. In the face of AI, the "one skill" obtained through practicing problems may be easily replaced, and the excellent personality cultivated through moral education will not stand firm. They have ideals, abilities, and responsibilities, and can shoulder the burden of family, country, and humanity. If I were to paint a portrait of them from the bottom of my heart, I would describe it as follows: they should be lifelong athletes with a healthy physique. They cherish life, love sports, are full of vitality, sunny and cheerful, positive and upward, and believe that every tomorrow is better than today. They should be responsible individuals with noble character. Be kind, grateful, pursue ideals, tolerant and magnanimous, have dignity as a person, and keep the bottom line when doing things. They are enthusiastic about public welfare, concerned about the country, and have a broad vision for the world. They can take on the responsibilities of their future family, career, and social roles. They should be problem solvers with the ability to create. Lifelong learning, independent thinking, maintaining curiosity, being imaginative, advocating science, loving labor, daring to practice, and good at creation. At the moment, they are not helpless bystanders or complaining people who blame others, but actors who can solve problems with wisdom. They should be elegant lifestyle enthusiasts with aesthetic literacy. To discover, experience, and create beauty with a keen sense of beauty, to be enthusiastic, humorous, and elegant, to pursue a refined spiritual life, to be good at managing one's own emotions, to appreciate the excellence of others, and to bring warmth, harmony, happiness, and beauty to society. We can outline and depict the image of future students as a whole, or we can ask about the changes that education needs to undergo in the face of the AI era. Let's also ask: if speech to text conversion is allowed, do lower grade children still need to write so much written homework when their finger fine motor skills are not yet fully developed? If it is allowed to bring a calculator to school, do students still need to improve their speed and accuracy of calculations by practicing problems from first grade of elementary school to third grade of high school? If the college entrance examination also allows students to use AI, which learning methods would become worthless today? The speed of change in the AI era is much faster than we can imagine. Waiting has no future, and staying the same can only lead to being eliminated. Each of us needs to narrate this change with our own sentences from the bottom of our hearts, gather it into the popular language of education in our era, express our consensus, promote educational reform and innovation, and thus depict the image of students standing in the AI era, cultivating a new generation of people who shoulder the great responsibility of national rejuvenation.
