Kirsty Coventry becomes the first female president of the International Olympic Committee

On March 20th local time, at the 144th session of the International Olympic Committee held in Greece, Kirsty Coventry won the first round of voting with an absolute advantage and was elected as the President of the International Olympic Committee. Kirsty Coventry also became the first female International Olympic Committee President and the first International Olympic Committee President from Africa. Coventry was born in 1983 and is of Zimbabwean nationality. She won the gold medal in the women's 200m backstroke at the 2004 Athens Olympics and the 2008 Beijing Olympics. She became a member of the International Olympic Committee in 2013, served as the President of the International Olympic Committee Athletes' Commission, is currently a member of the International Olympic Committee Executive Board, the President of the International Olympic Committee Dakar Youth Olympic Games Coordination Committee, and the President of the 2032 Brisbane Olympic Games Coordination Committee. Minister of Sports, Entertainment and Arts of Zimbabwe. She will succeed Thomas Bach as the 10th President of the International Olympic Committee in June this year. (New Society)
