How can young people who have been surrounded by cultural relics restoration achieve a transition from passion to perseverance?

On May 12th, the Sichuan Skills Competition and the 2025 National Cultural Relics Industry Vocational Skills Competition Sichuan Provincial Selection Competition kicked off in Luzhou City. On site, 180 technical experts from across the province competed on the same stage, competing for the precious qualification to represent Sichuan in the national competition with their "fingertip craftsmanship". In the current trend of the "hot trend of ancient Chinese literature examination", more and more young forces are pouring into the forefront of cultural relic restoration and archaeological exploration and excavation. What changes will they bring to this industry? How should generations of 'cultural relic doctors' relay? On May 13th, reporters from Huaxi Metropolis Daily and Cover News interviewed three expert consultants of this competition. They have been working in the field of archaeology and cultural heritage for decades, witnessing the gradual "heat" and "fire" of obscure and unique knowledge. Compared to the quiet and peaceful environment of paper, calligraphy, painting, and ceramic cultural relic restoration zones, the wooden cultural relic restoration zone can be described as a bustling scene where young people strive to become cultural relic restorers. And in the adjacent mud tile composition restoration area, there were constant sounds of stirring and scraping cement. Upon closer inspection, there were "masters" with slightly graying hair and skilled craftsmanship, as well as young people who were serious and focused. I feel like there are more young players than before. ”On site, all three expert consultants coincidentally mentioned this point. In the view of Sun Zhibin, Vice President and Secretary General of the Sichuan Archaeological Society and Research Curator of the Sichuan Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology, not only do young participants account for a large proportion in the archaeological excavation project, but there are also some female participants participating. Since entering the field of immovable cultural relics protection in 1979, Zhu Xiaonan, an expert in the expert database of the National Cutural Heritage Administration and the former president of Sichuan Provincial Association for the Protection of Historic Sites, has been deeply involved in this industry for 46 years. He said that when he first started working, he was also a young person, but now he sees more young people joining the protection of immovable cultural relics and witnessing the changes in the talent training mechanism for cultural relic restoration skills. In the past, cultural relic restoration was mostly passed down from generation to generation through the form of 'master apprentice'. However, now many universities have established related majors in cultural relic restoration. Zhu Xiaonan mentioned that the skilled talents cultivated through schools not only receive technical guidance, but also have more solid theoretical foundations. After more than 40 years of research in the field of cultural heritage, Wei Quan, Vice Chairman of the China Association for the Protection of Cultural Relics, said, "I hope more young people can join the protection and restoration of cultural heritage. But the protection and restoration of cultural relics should not be a momentary passion, it needs to be persevered and worked for a long time." How to go from love to perseverance? Over the course of a long period of time, generation after generation of cultural relic restorers have been sitting on the bench for decades, passing on their restoration techniques and traditional craftsmanship, and witnessing the rise of the trend of "studying ancient Chinese literature". At the same time, with the continuous development of technology, more new technologies have also been integrated into the restoration work, giving new life to many cultural relics fragments that were "dormant" in the warehouse. On site, the three experts also discussed the topic of how contemporary young people can continue to adhere to this industry. Nowadays, the country attaches increasing importance to the archaeological and cultural heritage industry, and the public's attention continues to increase. But the public's attention should not be directed towards curiosity. ”Sun Zhibin said that archaeological exploration and excavation are highly policy oriented, professional, and skilled jobs. So passion alone is not enough. We must lay a solid foundation in order to carry out our work smoothly. "In Zhu Xiaonan's opinion, when facing ancient buildings that have gone through vicissitudes, it seems that he can travel through time and space to have a dialogue with them. So he believes that when young people delve into this industry, they will also develop a deep and intimate emotional attachment to ancient architecture. Faced with this' old man ', I want to do my best to prolong his life. We cannot let him' rejuvenate ', but we want him to' prolong his life '. I think young people may also develop this kind of emotion after working for a period of time, just like me. In addition, Wei Quan mentioned the importance of lifelong learning. He believes that the knowledge of cultural relic restoration involves a wide range, not only requiring professional knowledge, but also emphasizing the integration of multiple disciplines. Cultural relic protection workers need to solve the problem of cultural relic survival, as well as restore the historical, artistic, scientific, and cultural values of cultural relics. (New Society)
