The World Telecommunication and Information Society Day 2025 and the 160th anniversary of the establishment of the International Telecommunication Union will be held in Nanchang, Jiangxi. The reporter learned from the event that China's research and development of key technologies such as 5G-A and 6G, as well as the development of international standards, are in the forefront of the world. The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology will accelerate the research and development, industrial cultivation, and application of 5G-A and 6G technologies, empowering the construction of a modern industrial system. The latest data shows that as of the end of March, China has built 4.395 million 5G base stations, accelerated the evolution and upgrading of communication networks to 5G-A, and integrated 5G applications into 86 out of 97 major categories of the national economy, effectively promoting the deep integration of the real economy and the digital economy. Based on the excellent technological industry and market development of existing 5G, 5G has entered the stage of evolution towards 5G-A. ”Xin Wei, Director of the Wireless Informatization Research Department at the Institute of Technology and Standards of China Academy of Information and Communications Technology, told Economic Reference News reporters that on the one hand, 5G-A, as an evolved version of 5G, continues to support the large-scale development of 5G applications by cultivating more new businesses and applications; On the other hand, the early introduction of key 6G technologies such as perception, artificial intelligence, and the fusion of heaven and earth in 5G-A will lay the foundation for the international standardization of these technologies in the 6G stage, and further provide experience for the expansion of 6G application scenarios. It is worth mentioning that currently, the technological industry innovation in related fields in China continues to deepen. According to data from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the global proportion of necessary patent declarations for 5G standards in China exceeds 42%. In terms of 6G research and development, we have guided the establishment of the IMT-2030 (6G) promotion group, released more than 50 research results such as the "Overall Vision and Potential Key Technologies of 6G", organized testing and verification of key 6G technologies such as integrated sensing and wireless AI, and accelerated technological maturity. Next, Zhang Yunming, Deputy Minister of Industry and Information Technology, stated that the information and communication industry should pay more attention to meeting the needs of comprehensive innovation, carefully organize and implement various national science and technology major projects, accelerate the research and development of 5G-A and 6G technologies, industrial cultivation and application development, and empower the construction of a modern industrial system. Three basic telecommunications companies are also focusing on key areas such as 5G-A and 6G, accelerating the evolution and upgrading of new information infrastructure. During the event, He Biao, General Manager of China Mobile, introduced that China Mobile's 5G-A covers all cities across the country. The next step is to promote the upgrade from 5G to 5G-A, accelerate the pilot of integrated sensing and passive IoT capabilities, and promote the innovative evolution from 5G-A to 6G. In addition, China Telecom's 5G-A package was officially launched for commercial use on May 17th. It is reported that China Telecom is increasing investment in the construction of 5G-A networks and has currently deployed and upgraded 5G-A base stations in 121 cities. Under policy guidance, China has become a global leader in 5G-A technology standards and network construction. ”Xin Wei said that the next step is to strengthen research and international cooperation on 5G-A standards, and form a standard system covering 5G-A base stations, terminals, and networks; Explore 5G-A integrated applications and business models, take the lead in breaking through key industry scenarios with rigid demands, collaborate to cultivate 5G-A scenario based and standardized application solutions, and implement a batch of high-quality 5G-A application projects; Establish cross industry and cross domain 5G-A integrated application innovation centers or laboratories, build a 5G-A product research and development and promotion system, and help solution providers improve their 5G-A technology integration capabilities. Experts say that through the dual wheel drive of "technological breakthroughs+ecological collaboration" in the 5G-A phase, 6G is expected to have commercial capabilities around 2030. (New Society)
