Recently, the joint experimental team led by the Zijinshan Observatory of the Chinese Academy of Sciences has made a major breakthrough in the field of terahertz communication, marking the successful verification of terahertz communication technology and providing new ideas and practical examples for the development of high-capacity communication technology in China. Relevant achievements have been published online in the National Science Review. Starting from October 2024, the research team of Purple Mountain Observatory will conduct experiments near the site of the submillimeter wave observatory in Xueshan Ranch, Haixi Mongolian and Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Qinghai Province (at an altitude of 4445 meters). The team successfully achieved real-time wireless transmission of high-definition videos over a distance of 1.2 kilometers using a fully independently developed 60 centimeter aperture terahertz astronomical telescope system equipped with a 500 GHz frequency band and a quantum extreme sensitivity superconducting mixing receiver, as well as a fully electronic terahertz signal transmitter with an output power of only 15 microwatts. This achievement is the first international application of terahertz astronomical telescope system in the field of terahertz communication, verifying the enormous potential of using terahertz astronomical telescope for high-capacity communication between satellite and ground in Xueshan Ranch.
