Hong Kong's retail industry improves in May, ending a 14 month decline

The Census and Statistics Department of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government announced on the 2nd that the provisional estimate of the total retail sales value in Hong Kong in May was HKD 31.3 billion, an increase of 2.4% compared to the same period last year, ending a 14 month continuous decline. After deducting price changes during this period, the provisional estimate of the total retail sales volume in May increased by 1.9% compared to the same period last year. The provisional estimate of the total retail sales volume for the first five months of this year is 5.5% lower than the same period last year. A spokesperson for the Special Administrative Region government stated that the retail industry improved in May. After seasonal adjustment, the total retail sales value increased by 7% on a monthly basis. The spokesperson stated that the retail industry in Hong Kong is continuing to adapt to changes in consumption patterns, and the SAR government is actively promoting tourism and event projects. In addition, the increase in local employment income and the sustained steady growth of the mainland economy will help boost the consumer atmosphere and support the consumer market. (New Society)
