China Agricultural University recently announced that the "Animal Science (Companion Animals)" major, which will be offered this year, has attracted much attention. This is the first undergraduate major in China with "pets" as its core training direction, which is a beneficial attempt for industrial transformation and promoting the integration of industry and education. This major belongs to the category of "Animal Science", with courses covering multiple key modules such as pet nutrition and food, pet behavior, pet care, pet reproduction and breeding. It closely focuses on the talent cultivation needs faced by the rapid rise of the companion animal industry, and is committed to cultivating compound talents with solid animal science foundations and rich industry practical abilities. In recent years, China's pet economy has experienced explosive growth. Related studies have shown that by 2024, the size of China's pet consumption market has exceeded 300 billion yuan, with a compound annual growth rate of 11.9% in the past 10 years, significantly higher than mature markets such as the United States and Japan, and showing a pattern of food dominance (52.8%) and accelerated medical growth (13.9%). According to statistics, there are currently over 500000 registered pet related enterprises in China, with a wide range of business areas including pet food, medical care, beauty, domestication, insurance, funeral, and many other sub sectors. A complete industrial chain covering upstream and downstream has been initially formed. The vigorous development of the industry calls for a more sufficient supply of talent. For example, the field of pet medicine requires a large number of high-level veterinary talents, who are required to have the ability to diagnose and treat some complex diseases. In the fields of pet grooming, domestication, and other services, there is also a strong demand for talent, and practitioners are required to possess systematic professional knowledge; Professional technical talents are an important guarantee for enterprises to innovate products and improve quality in core technical aspects such as pet food research and development and nutrition matching. The establishment of the undergraduate major in "Pets" accurately responds to the urgent demand for high-quality professionals in the market, and also demonstrates the keen insight and response of higher education to the development trends of emerging industries. The establishment of the undergraduate major in "Pets" will undoubtedly quench the talent thirst for industry development, continuously supply professional talents to the industry, effectively optimize supply and demand matching, and enhance the service capability and industry quality of the entire industry, while driving the upgrading of talent structure. The establishment of the "Pet" major is also a microcosm of the coordinated development of higher education and industry in the context of industry education integration. In recent years, many universities across the country have actively explored effective ways to organically connect the education chain, talent chain, industry chain, and innovation chain, and have achieved good results. For example, Hunan Agricultural University actively responds to market demand by offering majors related to pet clinical diagnosis, treatment, and care, and collaborates with multiple pet companies and industry associations to enable students to fully access cutting-edge technology in the industry and personally participate in practice, greatly improving their practical abilities and employment competitiveness. This also enlightens us that the development of majors in universities needs to further strengthen the integration of industry and education. On the one hand, we will promote precise alignment between course content and job requirements, achieve close linkage between teaching process and practical operation, vigorously strengthen the construction of training bases and technology platforms jointly built by schools and enterprises, and enable students to exercise and grow in real work environments; On the other hand, actively guiding industry associations to deeply participate in the formulation and certification evaluation of talent standards, and enhancing the overall professionalization and standardization of the industry. We hope that there will be more and more innovative practices that deeply integrate and promote education and industry, helping to build a skilled society and providing stronger support for high-quality economic and social development.
