Special thanks to all of you who grew up together "- According to a report by Trendy News on July 4th, in June, Lu, a student from Zhejiang, happily shared photos of herself wearing a bachelor's gown, graduation certificate, degree certificate, and a bunch of honor certificates on her social media. She is the first graduate of the undergraduate major in home economics in Zhejiang Province. One third of the students in this class have devoted themselves to the field of health and wellness, one-third have entered the childcare industry, and some have become home economics trainers or joined family health management startups. It can be said that "graduation leads to employment" and were "snatched up" early on. For a long time, the domestic service industry has been labeled as "low threshold" and "serving people". Most of the employees are aunties in their forties or fifties, and their fields are mainly focused on cleaning and nanny services. In the context of this outdated concept, some universities offering home economics majors are often questioned as "overusing talents" and even referred to as "nanny majors" in the public. Home economics is essentially a branch of sociology. With the continuous development and progress of society, as well as the subdivision of industry fields, modern home economics has become a "happy industry" that integrates professional skills and humanistic care. It is attracting more and more highly educated talents to join, and graduates have diverse career paths and increasing value. The domestic service industry is a very understaffed industry. The National Development and Reform Commission revealed at a press conference in November last year that the preliminary estimate of the shortage of domestic workers exceeded 20 million, and the shortage of high-quality domestic service personnel with professional technical knowledge is particularly prominent. This "labor shortage" is essentially a "quality shortage" - when families born in the 1980s and 1990s become the main consumer group of domestic services, their demand for services has upgraded from "laundry and cooking" to a scenario where multiple needs such as "scientific parenting", "elderly care", and "family health management" are superimposed. Nowadays, the demand for high-quality talents in the domestic service industry has become a "must-have", and the market has provided an answer through practical actions of "grabbing people" - this phenomenon not only releases a positive signal for the job market, but also marks the accelerated transformation of the domestic service industry from traditional labor-intensive to modern service-oriented. Breaking stereotypes and embracing specialized development have become industry consensus. Of course, there are still some people who hold controversial views on highly educated talents entering the domestic service industry. Essentially, this is a manifestation of professional bias that is not synchronized with industry upgrading. The core of career choice lies in the match between personal values and social needs, rather than the mechanical correspondence between education and career. The higher the degree of specialization in the domestic service industry, the more it can attract high-quality talents and form a virtuous cycle. To break professional bias and make "housekeeping" a respected choice, it is necessary to vigorously promote professionalization and professional development. In the "Opinions on Promoting the Quality and Expansion of the Home Service Industry" issued by the State Council in 2019, it was proposed that in principle, each province should have at least one undergraduate university and several vocational colleges offering home service related majors to expand enrollment. Nowadays, undergraduate degree is no longer the upper limit for home economics education. In 2021, Hebei Normal University added a degree authorization point for Master of Home Economics, which is the first school in China to independently establish a degree authorization point for this major. Subsequently, universities in Jiangsu, Jilin and other places also began to explore the establishment of master's programs in home economics... All of these demonstrate the vision and confidence of relevant parties in the development of the home economics industry. The contradiction between supply and demand of domestic talents forces the education system to deeply integrate with industry demands. In many vocational schools or majors, the integrated training mode of "theoretical learning+practical training" has gradually become the "standard", enabling graduates to have the practical ability of "getting started on the job". This model of industry education integration is reshaping the industry ecosystem and constantly refreshing expectations from all parties. The high demand for graduates majoring in home economics is not only an urgent call for professional talents in the market, but also a microcosm of the progress of social professional concepts. This industry has vast development space and infinite possibilities, and we look forward to more high-quality talents injecting new vitality. (New Society)
