The Macao Special Administrative Region Government stated on the 15th that it firmly supports the Legislative Council Electoral Affairs Commission in fulfilling its duties and responsibilities in accordance with the law. On July 15th, the Electoral Affairs Commission of the Legislative Council of the Macao Special Administrative Region made a decision in accordance with the law to disqualify candidates who do not support the Basic Law or pledge allegiance to the Macao Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China, based on the qualification review conducted by the Committee for Safeguarding National Security of the Macao Special Administrative Region. The decision is a correct measure to fully implement the fundamental principle of "patriots governing Macao" in strict accordance with the provisions of the Law on Safeguarding National Security and the Law on the Election of the Legislative Council. The Macao Special Administrative Region government expresses strong support for this decision. The SAR government stated that the 8th Legislative Council election is the first Legislative Council election held in the Macau Special Administrative Region after the completion of the amendment to the Legislative Council Election Law in 2024. According to Article 33 of the amended Legislative Council Election Law, the Committee for Safeguarding National Security shall make judgments on whether candidates support the Basic Law and pledge allegiance to the Macao Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China, and issue binding review opinions to the Legislative Council Election Commission for those who do not comply. The Electoral Affairs Commission of the Legislative Council, based on the review opinion of the Committee for the Safeguarding of National Security, has made a decision that a candidate does not meet the qualifications of a candidate, and cannot file a statement of objection or judicial appeal against this decision. The SAR government emphasizes that the 8th Legislative Council election is a major political event for the Macao Special Administrative Region to fully implement the principle of "patriots governing Macao". Supporting the Basic Law and being loyal to the Macao Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China are the most basic legal obligations and political ethics that Legislative Council members should abide by. Under the constitutional order established by the Constitution of the People's Republic of China and the Basic Law, those who enter the governance structure of the Special Administrative Region must be steadfast patriots and Australians. The SAR government will continue to fully support the Legislative Council Election Commission in fulfilling its duties and responsibilities in accordance with the law, fully implement the principle of "patriots governing Macau", effectively ensure the smooth holding of the eighth Legislative Council election, fully protect the rights and freedoms enjoyed by Macau residents in accordance with the law, unite and cooperate with all sectors of society, and work together to continuously promote the successful practice of "one country, two systems" with Macau characteristics.
