Breaking conventions and shaping the professional image of the new era

2025-07-16

Among many professions, flight attendants, abbreviated as "flight attendants," are currently one of the most misunderstood professions. The most obvious manifestation of this misunderstanding is that for many years, people have always referred to "flight attendants" as "flight attendants" and "flight attendants", and even some passengers may call them waiters. This kind of title has become a convention, and it is easy for people to overlook the responsibilities behind this profession. Recently, the news of a large domestic airline promoting female flight attendants to wear flat shoes during flights has attracted attention. The airline's flight attendants can wear flat shoes throughout the entire duty period (from pre flight check-in to post flight evaluation), bidding farewell to the step of "changing high heels to flat bottoms and then high heels". Last year, a small airline in China also promoted the policy of flight attendants wearing flat shoes during flights, which received high praise. However, such a measure to reduce the burden on flight attendants has not been promoted in all domestic airlines, and the top few airlines have not yet implemented this policy. The medical community has long had a consensus on high heels, calling them "beautiful instruments of torture". But airlines require female flight attendants to wear high heels, which has been a professional image requirement for decades. Similar requirements also include that female flight attendants must wear skirts and be required to wear stockings, etc. So usually, flight attendants can only change into flat shoes for work after boarding, in order to ensure work safety and flight safety. After the flight ends, it is necessary to change into high heels to continue maintaining its professional image. The reason why flight attendants are flight attendants rather than service personnel is that they are important executors in maintaining civil aviation flight safety. Before each flight attendant takes up their post, they need to undergo professional skills training, including but not limited to handling abnormal/emergency situations on board, firefighting, emergency evacuation on land (jumping on slides), etc. They also need to undergo retraining and assessment within the prescribed period to obtain corresponding qualifications. Without qualifications, flight attendants will not be allowed to board the flight. People often think that the job responsibilities of flight attendants are only to deliver food and water, but little do they know that they are an important part of ensuring civil aviation safety. The professional image of flight attendants has its historical origins and international factors, but to this day, such professional requirements and rules have long been outdated. A professional image may exist, but is it really beneficial for civil aviation safety? The trade-off between advantages and disadvantages needs to be considered by airlines. Recently, talk show actors roast about the inconvenience of flight attendants wearing skirts and silk stockings, which resonated with netizens. There is a conflict between safety factors and professional image here. Skirts are inconvenient to move around and are not conducive to flight attendants fulfilling their duties in emergency situations. According to regulations, stockings need to be removed during emergency evacuations. Since that's the case, why should we continue with these outdated professional dress codes? Although some airlines have recognized that female flight attendants can wear pants, more airlines still require female flight attendants to dress professionally. It should be noted that civil aviation, as one of the main modes of transportation, has public service attributes, which means that flight attendants are also providers of public services, and their professional image shaping must be different from that of ordinary service industries. Therefore, with the airline's promotion of professional dress code reform, on the one hand, it can help passengers re recognize the uniqueness and differences of the flight attendant profession, and on the other hand, it can also break through old rules and no longer enforce various outdated regulations. Only in this way can the professional background be better enhanced and related professions better fulfill their duties and responsibilities. Not only flight attendants, but also professions such as kindergarten teachers and bank tellers do not need to showcase their abilities by creating a unified professional image. For example, in recent years, under the conscious promotion of short videos and marketing accounts, the profession of preschool teachers has been alienated into various labels such as young and lovely, beautiful women, and child caregivers. This is a disrespect for the preschool teacher profession and the teaching industry. But the emergence of relevant labels is closely related to people's inherent cognition, which is also transmitted to relevant subjects, leading to the continued reference to conventional norms in the selection of personnel for the preschool teacher profession. This kind of cognition fails to recognize the professionalism of the preschool teacher profession, nor does it truly shape the correct image of the preschool teacher profession. A preschool teacher is not a profession that anyone can become, let alone a nanny. Communicating with young children not only requires patience, but also professional skills. Preschool teachers not only need to accompany children, but also need to embody various roles and subtly teach them various knowledge, which cannot be undertaken with a sense of professional responsibility. All industries are important components and indispensable drivers of economic and social development. The correct shaping of their professional image is related to professional honor and the respect of the entire society for the professional industry. Only when everyone can view each profession correctly and avoid misunderstandings, can related professions better showcase their professional background, and relevant groups can better shine in their positions, jointly promoting economic and social development on the fast track.
