Setting up cooling areas in the subway showcases urban inclusiveness and warmth

2025-07-16

Recently, Shenzhen, Guangdong has been experiencing continuous high temperatures. During lunchtime, some netizens saw many workers dressed in work clothes sitting or lying quietly on both sides of the aisle in the "cooling area" of Shenzhen Metro Shenyun Station. No one drove them away, nor did anyone look at them with strange eyes. After the release of the related video, comments such as "Can fit a briefcase, can also fit a safety helmet" and "Shenzhen Metro is so warm" crowded the comment section, and many netizens praised the Shenzhen Metro's approach. Proactively establishing "temporary cooling areas" for workers, providing free drinking water and heatstroke prevention drugs, and bringing chairs for workers to rest better... These measures of Shenzhen Metro are a manifestation of the open embrace of urban public spaces to welcome migrant workers. This flexible management thinking and detailed setting fully express respect and value recognition for ordinary workers, and demonstrate the warmth and attitude of a city giving back to urban builders. As netizens have said, 'It can fit both a briefcase and a safety helmet.' This respect and tolerance in urban public spaces is more refreshing and enjoyable than air conditioning itself. It is gratifying that many places such as Chongqing, Chengdu, Nanchang, Wuxi, and Hefei are also providing free cooling areas based on subway station resources - all 423 subway stations in Chengdu's entire network can provide cooling. Nanchang Metro has set up outdoor worker stations, while Wuxi Metro is equipped with service facilities such as books and shared umbrellas to provide care for busy workers... The establishment of "cooling areas" has opened the door for migrant workers to go to urban public spaces. In addition to the acceptance of physical spaces, they deeply hope to be treated equally and respected in diverse scenarios. In reality, there are still some people who view migrant workers with colored glasses, making them cautious and somewhat restrained in urban public spaces. To make this group fully feel the recognition and respect of society for their contributions, it is necessary for everyone to start from themselves and release more goodwill when meeting and coexisting with them. In April of this year, a construction worker in Qingdao, Shandong, chose to sit on the ground while taking a bus because he was afraid of dirtying his seat. The driver kindly advised him to sit down and even gave him his own bread and milk, saying "It's okay, earning money with your own hands is the proudest thing", which moved the construction worker deeply. Later, the construction worker wrote in a thank-you letter, "Because of your words and the bread you handed me, I felt the warmth and familiarity of returning to my hometown, and believed that laborers are the most honorable. Not long ago, a video of a man frequently insulting his neighbor's migrant worker on Line 5 of the Beijing subway went viral on the internet. In the video, a female passenger said, "I am willing to be next to him," demonstrating a posture and upbringing of seeing, tolerating, and accepting different labor groups, allowing people to see what a civilized society should look like. May more cities bring this' coolness' online, and may more goodwill towards caring for workers flow in urban public spaces. (New Society)
