Upgrading charging facilities to solve 'range anxiety'
2025-07-17
The "range anxiety" of new energy vehicles is expected to gradually be eliminated. Recently, four departments including the National Development and Reform Commission and the National Energy Administration issued the "Notice on Promoting the Scientific Planning and Construction of High Power Charging Facilities" (hereinafter referred to as the "Notice"), proposing to steadily build a reasonably laid out, quality upgraded, and technologically advanced high-power charging infrastructure system, timely create a number of demonstration cities and high-speed corridors for high-power charging applications, and strive to have more than 100000 high-power charging facilities nationwide by the end of 2027. This is a crucial step in implementing precise policies at the national level to address the pain points in the development of new energy vehicles. Currently, new energy vehicle users, especially long-distance travelers, face the dilemma of long charging waiting times and poor experience. During peak holiday travel periods, there is a serious queuing phenomenon at charging stations in highway service areas. In addition, there are prominent issues such as insufficient number and uneven distribution of charging stations, as well as aging or damage of some equipment. How to improve charging efficiency? Building high-power charging facilities is an important path. The charging time of electric vehicles mainly depends on the vehicle battery capacity and the charging power of the charging station. This is like using a faucet to connect water. Ordinary charging stations have a "small water flow", while high-power charging stations have a "large water flow". High power charging facilities achieve fast charging by increasing current and voltage parameters, thickening wires, optimizing interfaces, and other methods to make electricity run faster and deliver more. The notice proposes to build high-power charging facilities with a single gun output power exceeding 250 kilowatts. The construction of high-power charging facilities has a core value far beyond "speed". On the one hand, it can unleash the potential of the new energy vehicle market. From a user experience perspective, higher charging efficiency means less' range anxiety '. On the other hand, it can improve the operational efficiency of new energy vehicles. For high-frequency vehicles such as taxis, ride hailing services, and logistics vehicles, significantly reducing the energy replenishment time can improve operational efficiency. Since high-power charging facilities have many benefits, why not promote them earlier? The maturity of technology is a prerequisite for "supercharging" to move from the laboratory to large-scale commercial use. In recent years, the third-generation semiconductor charging technology represented by silicon carbide has gradually matured. It can withstand high temperature and high voltage, greatly improving the efficiency of charging equipment in energy conversion and significantly reducing energy loss. Silicon carbide technology can also make charging equipment smaller in size and lighter in weight, which is convenient for installation and layout, and reduces construction costs. At the same time, the popularization of liquid cooling technology provides safe and efficient heat dissipation, improving charging efficiency and stability. Technological progress has provided strong support for the development of high-power charging facilities. Considering the many advantages of high-power charging facilities, major manufacturers have increased their production and construction efforts in recent years. Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Hainan and other places have launched construction plans such as "Supercharging City," "Supercharging Capital," and "Supercharging Island," clearly supporting high-power fast charging technology. In response to the problems faced by the construction of high-power charging facilities, the new policy has put forward targeted regulatory requirements. In terms of construction timing, it is required to first implement high-power transformation of charging facilities with utilization rates exceeding 40% during major holidays, in order to avoid resource waste and disorderly construction. In terms of standards, it is crucial to emphasize the unity and forward compatibility of charging interfaces, communication protocols, and other standards to avoid "going it alone" and ensure worry free use for users. Can the power grid withstand the large-scale application of high-power charging facilities? The impact of ultra large scale and ultra-high power charging loads on local power grids cannot be ignored, and it is necessary to promote the integration and development of high-power charging facilities with the power grid. Moderately advance the construction of the power grid and timely renovate and upgrade it to enhance the access capacity of the distribution network and the load response and regulation capability of charging stations. The construction of a high-quality charging and swapping system is not only a competition for charging speed, but also a solid foundation for China to lead the second half of the global new energy vehicle industry. To continuously improve this system, inject strong impetus into the upgrading of the automotive industry, and lead the new trend of global green transportation. (New Society)
