Hong Kong's artificial intelligence (AI) company recently launched QueWi, the first publicly available and free multi model automatic collaborative universal question answering system in the region. According to the developer Hong Kong Wina Intelligent Technology Co., Ltd., the application benchmarks against current international mainstream AI models, with over 94% of current affairs information having news level traceability capabilities and supporting intelligent aggregation of multilingual content. The launch of "QueWi" can be seen as a microcosm of the rapid development of Hong Kong's AI industry in recent times. With the active promotion of the local innovation and technology industry and the support of the Hong Kong SAR government's industrial policies, innovative achievements in the field of AI in Hong Kong continue to emerge, becoming a new economic growth point in the local area. The second season of the "2025 Hong Kong International Talent and Career Expo" held recently focused on "innovative technology, industrial manufacturing, and smart cities", covering cutting-edge fields such as AI, financial economy, and intelligent manufacturing. It attracted more than 50 companies to participate in the event, and nearly 5000 people came to the site to apply for jobs on the day of the event. Sun Dong, the Secretary for Innovation, Technology and Industry of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government, stated that the industrial ecosystem in Hong Kong will become more diverse, and the demand for professional and innovative talents will become increasingly urgent, with a particular shortage in areas such as data analysis and artificial intelligence. According to the latest round of manpower projection report released by the Labour and Welfare Bureau of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government, it is expected that by 2030, the manpower demand for the innovation and technology industry, including AI and other fields, will exceed 100000 innovation and technology professionals. The thirst for talent reflects the regional industrial layout of the Special Administrative Region government. The Hong Kong SAR government has shown strong support for AI and technological innovation. According to the 2025-2026 fiscal year budget, the Hong Kong SAR government plans to allocate HKD 1 billion specifically for the establishment of the Hong Kong Artificial Intelligence Research Institute. In addition, five projects led by local universities and research institutions in Hong Kong have been approved to accelerate the development of multiple large-scale models. Last December, the largest artificial intelligence supercomputing center in Hong Kong was put into use, and the Cyberport Artificial Intelligence Laboratory was also put into operation simultaneously. Fang Chengyu, Director of the Han Lide Language Research Intelligent Application Center at City University of Hong Kong, believes that the Supercomputing Center will become an indispensable pillar in the development of AI in Hong Kong. The Supercomputing Center will gather talents in computing power, data, and algorithm technology, coupled with the Cyberport Artificial Intelligence Laboratory. The various policy measures launched by the Hong Kong SAR government will orderly improve the development of the Hong Kong AI ecosystem and promote the "digital intelligence" application of AI. Under the global wave of digital transformation, accelerating the transformation of industrial momentum, AI technology has become a new engine driving economic development. Many companies in Hong Kong are actively promoting AI+initiatives and using AI to empower various industries. From fashion design to medical diagnosis, from film and television creation to fintech, Hong Kong's AI industry is demonstrating development potential in multiple fields. The logic behind this is not difficult to understand - as an international financial center, Hong Kong needs to leverage cutting-edge technology to consolidate its position, while traditional financial industries such as insurance, banking, and securities are using a large amount of AI technology to improve efficiency. In February of this year, the Hong Kong Generative Artificial Intelligence Research and Development Center released the HKGAI V1 large model. Recently, the first application based on this big model, "Hong Kong Talk", is expected to be open to the public in the second half of the year. Supported by Hong Kong's largest local knowledge base of large models, this model can identify Cantonese, English and Mandarin, and generate answers in different languages, which is described by the industry as an important milestone in the development of Hong Kong AI. In the view of Yang Hongxia, Vice Dean of the School of Computer and Mathematical Sciences and Professor of Electronic Computing at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, the opportunities and potential for the development of AI in Hong Kong coexist, and the key lies in the joint efforts of all sectors to fully leverage the role of university experts and advantageous industries. Guo Yike, Chief Vice President of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and Director of the HKGAI Centre, introduced that Hong Kong has five universities that have made it to the top 100 in the world. Among them, in the 2025 QS World University Subject Rankings, the data science and AI fields of all five universities in Hong Kong are among the top 50 in the world, and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology leads Hong Kong in 17th place in the world. He expressed optimism that "the profound scientific research accumulation is accelerating its transformation into industrial momentum." Leveraging the advantages of internal and external connections, "as an international metropolis, Hong Kong is becoming a core hub connecting the country and the world's AI development. ”Guo Yike introduced that HKGAI's positioning is based in Hong Kong, serving the country, and facing the world. The HKGAI V1 model focuses on the application scenarios of vertical fields such as law, education, and healthcare that Hong Kong excels in. It not only serves Hong Kong residents, but also provides large-scale models and application services to overseas Chinese worldwide. Hong Kong Cyberport CEO Zheng Songyan stated that Hong Kong has a unique advantage of "relying on the motherland and connecting with the world", which can provide assistance for mainland AI companies to "go global" and promote business internationalization. On the other hand, in the context of actively integrating into the overall development of the country, Hong Kong also focuses on deepening exchanges with the mainland in the field of AI and leveraging each other's advantages. The Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area will be an active region for the research and development of artificial intelligence technology and products. Guo Yike believes that the process of AI industrialization can fully draw on the innovation model of DJI - integrating Hong Kong's top scientific research capabilities with the industrial chain advantages of the Greater Bay Area, and synergistically promoting AI products to the market. ”He stated that the core value of mainland cities in the Greater Bay Area lies in their complete industrial chain. The DJI innovation team is based in Hong Kong to carry out basic scientific research, relies on Shenzhen to achieve product research and iteration, and uses mature production lines in the Pearl River Delta region to complete large-scale production, ultimately promoting products to the national and even global markets. With the opening up of large-scale models and the development of collaborative innovation in the Bay Area, Hong Kong's capital flow continues to surge, technological innovation iterations accelerate, and talent resources converge into momentum, leading to a rapid leap in the AI ecosystem. The AI experiment in Hong Kong may redefine the human-machine co governance model in the era of intelligence, not only becoming the core engine for cultivating new quality productivity, but also driving Hong Kong towards the goal of becoming an international innovation and technology center at full speed.
