After 22 years of careful protection, the Zhangfei Temple, which has been relocated to the opposite bank of Yunyang New City in Chongqing, has become a model for cultural relic protection in the Three Gorges Reservoir area. This ancient architectural complex, which was first built during the Shu Han period, fully preserves national first-class cultural relics such as Yue Fei's handwritten "Memorial to Departing". Its main buildings, such as the Jieyi Tower and Wangyun Pavilion, are strictly restored to their original appearance during the Ming and Qing dynasties. In 2003, in order to cooperate with the construction of the Three Gorges Project, more than 100000 building components of the temple were relocated as a whole after 32 kilometers, creating a model for large-scale ancient building relocation in China. In recent years, with the increase of publicity and promotion efforts and the steady recovery of Three Gorges tourism, this millennium old temple carrying the essence of Three Kingdoms culture is rejuvenating, attracting more than 200000 tourists annually for sightseeing.
