Breakthrough in high-performance sealing coating technology in China

Recently, at the 2025 Innovation Achievement Conference of the Mining and Metallurgy Group, the "New Wear resistant Sealing Coating Technology" developed by the senior engineering team led by Yu Yueguang, the chief expert of the Mining and Metallurgy Group, was officially unveiled. This achievement marks a historic leap from "following" to "leading" in the field of sealing coating technology in China, and solves the "bottleneck" problem that has long plagued the development of high-end equipment in our country. As the "national treasures" in the fields of national defense and energy, the performance improvement of aviation engines, gas turbines, and steam turbines has always been a driving force for the development of national strategies. As the most widely used coating in these equipment, the wear-resistant sealing coating can be regarded as the "invisible guardian" to ensure efficient and safe operation: it can achieve precise dynamic sealing, avoid rotor damage due to collision and wear, improve equipment efficiency by 1%, reduce energy consumption by 1.5%, and double the service life of hot end components. However, the difficulty of developing this' magical coating 'is beyond imagination. It must serve in extreme environments of high temperature and high speed for a long time, possessing both "high wear resistance" to protect the rotor and "high bonding force" to prevent self detachment. China started relatively late in this field, and early coating products generally faced problems such as detachment, rotor wear, and short lifespan, which became a bottleneck restricting the development of high-end equipment in China. Faced with this dilemma, the sealing coating technology team of Beikuang New Materials Technology Co., Ltd. of the Mining and Metallurgy Group has embarked on a more than 20-year journey of research and development. With the support of more than ten national level projects such as the National Materials Special Project, the team took the establishment of a simulated high-temperature and high-speed working condition testing platform as a breakthrough point, successfully revealing the wear mechanism of coatings in extreme environments, as well as the influence of components on wear resistance. At the same time, they innovatively proposed the design concept of "strong and weak synergy between skeleton components and wear-resistant components". Now, the team has developed 8 types of long-life wear-resistant sealing coating materials that cover the entire temperature range; At the same time, the independently developed simulated working condition abrasion testing machine can accurately test at a high temperature of 1200 ℃ and a linear speed of 450m/s, and has the function of collecting debris. This series of achievements has established China's first comprehensive and independently controllable high-performance wear-resistant sealing coating technology system. The reporter learned that currently, this achievement has been deeply integrated into China's high-end equipment industry chain, covering not only the mass production and development of all key models of aviation engines and about two-thirds of advanced steam turbines, but also supporting the research and development of major independent gas turbine models, with a cumulative installed capacity of nearly 10000 units. This coating is used for aircraft engines with a lifespan of over 3500 hours, advanced steam turbines with a lifespan of over 60000 hours, and advanced gas turbines with a lifespan of over 30000 hours. It achieves efficient and safe operation of equipment and reduces carbon dioxide emissions by over 12 million tons annually, effectively supporting major demands in the fields of national defense and energy.
