Strengthen the care and services for migrant children

What impact does the mobile age have on children's lives? Not long ago, a survey conducted among migrant children in Shanghai showed that they face common problems: many children do not play well in their spare time, lack play resources, lack stable playmates, and their parents are busy with work and neglect companionship. High quality play is of great significance to children. The playful laughter that lingers in the streets and alleys is an indispensable element of colorful life. Moreover, playing helps with children's cognitive development. In play, children try new things in a relaxed and natural way, learn to interact with others, and enrich their inner world. Due to long-term travel or back and forth between different places, some migrant children face problems such as lack of companionship and difficulty in integrating. In addition, their residence is often far away from the core area of the city, and the accessibility of public facilities such as museums and sports venues is low. Many children's entertainment methods are limited to "playing on their phones" and "watching short videos". This makes them more prone to emotional disorders, mental health issues, and other problems. Experts have pointed out that for migrant children, participating in diverse entertainment activities is also a process of psychological intervention and social adaptation. In this sense, creating a more suitable environment for the growth of migrant children and making their lives full of joy is not only a matter of caring for the healthy development of minors, but also a positive measure to cope with the profound changes in the social transformation period. Nowadays, China is fully implementing the provision of basic public services by permanent residents. In the fields of education, healthcare, and affordable housing, migrant populations are enjoying increasing institutional guarantees. Further creating a more welcoming environment for growth, urban development should have more child perspectives. In August last year, the Ministry of Civil Affairs and 21 other departments jointly issued the "Action Plan for Strengthening the Care and Protection of Migrant Children", requiring the strengthening of care services for migrant children, such as improving the level of family education guidance, providing psychological health care services, strengthening spiritual and cultural life services, and carrying out urban integration services. From safeguarding basic rights such as education and medical treatment to better meeting the spiritual needs of migrant children, this is a resonance of social development and ideological progress. Cities not only need to have height, but also temperature. ”Fully considering the growth patterns and rights of children in all aspects of work, and prioritizing their protection and services, is an important aspect of urban humanistic care. In this regard, there is still considerable room for improvement. Creating child friendly spaces to make the learning and entertainment life of mobile children more colorful; Regularly organize caring activities to provide psychological counseling for them; Organize public welfare lectures to help parents and children establish good communication and emotional connections. When every child is treated with tenderness, the city becomes a warm home that carries dreams. The previous generation of migrant workers tend to leave their children in their registered residence. Nowadays, thanks to the improvement of the development environment, more people are bringing their children with them. This is a form of social progress, but we also need to recognize and actively respond to the new challenges brought about by this change. As a mega immigrant city, Shenzhen has an impressive slogan: "Those who come are Shenzhen people." In the current era of a large floating population, this inclusive and open attitude has warmed many foreigners. I sincerely hope that every city will open its arms and ensure that migrant workers can come in, stay, live comfortably, and become successful. Every person who carries their bags is not afraid to leave their hometown, and every childhood that travels far away can be comforted. (New Society)
