China's space station extravehicular service B achieves the goal of extending its lifespan "20 times in 4 years"

2025-08-19

On the 18th, it was learned from the China Astronaut Research and Training Center that during the third extravehicular activity successfully completed by the Shenzhou 20 crew on August 15th, astronaut Chen Dong's space station extravehicular suit B has provided support for a total of 20 extravehicular missions, becoming the first set of extravehicular suits in China's space station to achieve the "4 years 20 times" life extension goal. At present, the equipment has been used by 11 astronauts in 8 manned flight missions, and its status has been dynamically and accurately evaluated to be stable and good, providing solid support for the improvement of the quality and efficiency of space suit engineering applications and the normalization of extravehicular activities on space stations. As the core equipment for ensuring the safety and efficiency of astronauts' extravehicular activities, the functions and performance of the space station extravehicular service have been significantly improved. Compared with China's first generation extravehicular service, it has broken through key technologies such as long lifespan, high safety and reliability, and efficient operation support, effectively ensuring the extravehicular activities during the construction and operation of China's space station. The extravehicular service of the space station has become the first flight product to conduct life assessment and extend its lifespan in orbit. As of early 2024, the extravehicular service (EVA) for in orbit flights has approached the limit of its lifespan design target of "3 years and 15 times". In order to accurately evaluate the remaining lifespan of the extravehicular service, the team has developed a scientifically reasonable lifespan assessment and health monitoring plan, as well as in orbit detection methods. Through in-depth exploration of in orbit and ground test data, a large number of material level and product level validation tests have been conducted to achieve dynamic and accurate evaluation of the in orbit health and life extension of the extravehicular service, making it the first flight product to conduct life assessment and life extension in orbit, ensuring the safe and reliable use of the extravehicular service in orbit. The two new sets of extravehicular services D and E, which are on board the Tianzhou-9 cargo spacecraft, have completed unpacking and testing, and are in good condition. They will gradually be put into use in future extravehicular missions. (New Society)
