University cultivates' child rearing experts': social awareness is facing updates

2025-08-28

Universities are going to cultivate 'parenting experts'. According to media reports, in April of this year, the Ministry of Education released the "Catalogue of Undergraduate Majors in Ordinary Higher Education Institutions (2025)", which for the first time included the major of infant and child development and health management in the category of education. Shandong Women's University and Shaanxi Preschool Normal University became the first two universities in China to be approved for this major. In the new academic year, the first batch of students in this major will enroll. The cultivation of "child rearing experts" in universities means that China has begun to systematically cultivate talents in infant and young child rearing, which means that the understanding of simply understanding child rearing as "watching children" urgently needs to be updated. As experts have analyzed, the age range of 0-3 is a critical window of life development, during which the brain plasticity of infants and young children is extremely strong. Scientific responsive care will stimulate their potential and have a profound impact on their entire life. Although 'scientific responsive care' is to some extent embedded in oral parenting experience, it requires the use of scientific parenting knowledge to achieve, and it has a certain degree of professionalism. Some people believe that taking care of children is not so particular, as long as they are given food and drink, changed diapers frequently, and not frozen. "Didn't children in the past grow up in such a confused way?" Although this understanding is based on experience, it is often crude and may not meet the scientific requirements of parenting. Infants and young children are becoming increasingly "precious", often not because they are "delicate", but because with the development of the times, the whole society attaches greater importance to people themselves, especially the demand for the scientific growth of the next generation is far greater than before. The traditional extensive parenting style of the past may not be able to meet the needs of the new era. And this is precisely the supply and demand logic for infant and toddler care to become a specialized discipline and enter the university talent training system. Is it a waste of talent for college students to become parenting nannies? ”This kind of questioning is simple and direct, but upon careful study, we will find that talents who possess professional knowledge in infant physiology and psychology, nutritional feeding, exercise health, and responsive care, as well as abilities in creating infant and child environments, designing game activities, observing and evaluating infants and young children, disease prevention and treatment, and family education guidance, need to undergo interdisciplinary training and development in medicine, education, management, psychology, and other fields, and cannot be compared to traditional "parenting sisters". Since kindergarten, primary school, middle school, high school, and university education for children aged 3 and above are recognized as specialized disciplines, the cultivation of infants and young children aged 0-3, characterized by "poor expression of needs and difficulty in controlling their behavior," is certainly more challenging and should be regarded as a discipline and treated fairly. Starting to cultivate "parenting experts" in some universities this autumn is a good thing to adapt to the needs of the times. Once such exploration is successful, it will further alleviate the parenting anxiety of many parents. From the perspective of social division of labor, once professional tasks are handled by professionals, it will inevitably contribute to the overall improvement of the level. And these grandparents who have long suffered from the burden of raising children will also be a kind of "liberation", which will help improve the quality of elderly care for the silver haired generation. Of course, in addition to the positive aspects, we should also recognize the potential negative impacts of professionalization in infant and toddler care. For example, as "parenting experts" gradually enter the talent market and even become a trend, will it increase the burden of raising some families? If all the professional talents trained by schools flock to daycare institutions, and the fees charged by daycare institutions are too high, will it cause new unfairness? Therefore, how to establish a universal infant and toddler care system to ensure that every family can receive better childcare services is a concern that relevant departments should pay attention to. In addition, the "child rearing experts" trained by the state should not only master professional knowledge, but also have the consciousness to popularize parenting knowledge to society. By using community service centers, public health institutions, parent schools, and other platforms, we aim to widely impart professional parenting knowledge to young parents, with the hope that after a period of effort, every new parent can "take up their job with skills" and accompany their children's healthy growth with professional care and love.
