Using systems thinking methods to promote research on combat theory

The modernization of military theory is an important component of national defense and military modernization, and plays an important leading role in the development of a strong military. Currently, informationized and intelligent warfare is a massive and interactive command and action entity that uses a large number of informationized and intelligent weapons and equipment to engage in simultaneous adversarial warfare in multi-dimensional spaces such as land, sea, air, space, and electricity. It is not solely based on the confrontation between weapon platforms, nor is it a "rigid" combination of various weapon systems, but a "flexible" confrontation between two complex adaptive systems. The combat mode presents non-linearity, and the combat forces are integrated into a complex system with obvious emergence. The combat actions are manifested as highly adaptable self-organizing behavior, and the battlefield forms a highly mobile networked space with obvious complex system characteristics. The innovative development of information-based intelligent combat theory urgently needs to embrace system thinking methods, grasp the methodological essence of system thinking, and focus on the combination of overall and local descriptions, quantitative and qualitative descriptions, and deterministic and uncertain descriptions. While emphasizing local decomposition description, pay attention to understanding and grasping the issues of information and intelligent warfare as a whole. The methodology of ancient research and implementation of warfare is essentially holistic, emphasizing the grasp and description of combat phenomena from a holistic perspective. The methodology of mechanized warfare is reductionism, advocating the decomposition of the whole into parts for research, highlighted by the analytical reconstruction ideas represented by Clausewitz's "On War". According to the linear analytical thinking method of reductionism, war is regarded as a battle composed of countless small fights and battles, with several battles combined into one campaign and several campaigns forming one war. First, study the characteristics, laws, and implementation methods of each small combat and battle, and then expand to larger battles, campaigns, and even wars. The research and handling of this type of war problem corresponds to the mechanized production mode of the industrial era, and is consistent with the principle of combined action of mechanical systems. Under the guidance of this decomposition warfare methodology, the theory of mechanized warfare has a complete set of operable methods and has achieved great success. But with the increasing development of modern technology, combat practices are becoming more informationized, intelligent, and complex, and the characteristics of complex systems are becoming increasingly apparent. Simply relying on analysis and reconstruction methods is clearly no longer sufficient. Without returning to the level of combat elements and understanding every detail of combat, our overall understanding of the combat system can only be intuitive and general; Without a comprehensive understanding of the combat system, our understanding of combat can only be fragmented and mechanical. We only see the trees, not the forest, and cannot grasp the characteristics of combat and solve the problem of combat guidance from a holistic perspective. To this end, research on information-based intelligent warfare should combine overall and local descriptions. Local descriptions should be used to comprehensively analyze each component of the system, clarify how the elements or components in the system are interrelated, and clarify the environment and functional objects in which the combat system is located, as well as how the system and environment affect each other; We also need to use a holistic description to grasp the overall emergence of the system, and use direct synthesis, statistical synthesis, or more complex synthesis methods to effectively analyze the informationized intelligent combat system. While pursuing precise quantitative description, regression strengthens qualitative research in dealing with information and intelligent combat problems. Any system has both qualitative and quantitative characteristics. Qualitative characteristics determine quantitative characteristics, while quantitative characteristics reflect qualitative characteristics. Only qualitative descriptions make it difficult to have a deep and accurate understanding of the behavioral characteristics of the system. But qualitative description is the foundation of quantitative description. If the qualitative understanding is incorrect, no matter how precise and beautiful the quantitative description is, it is useless and may even lead the understanding astray. Quantitative description serves qualitative description, and using quantitative description can make qualitative description more profound and accurate. The combination of qualitative and quantitative descriptions is one of the fundamental principles in the research of information-based intelligent warfare. Cold weapon warfare, due to its simple combat procedures, single combat forces involved, and strong strategic planning, can achieve victory as long as the general laws of combat are flexibly applied and operational strategies are fully utilized. Therefore, qualitative description plays a huge role. Mechanized warfare, due to its procedural, normative, and additive nature of force scale, like large-scale industrial machinery operations, requires a perfect quantitative description for assembly line combat. Therefore, precise and quantitative descriptive sciences such as operational research have emerged. However, as the research objects of information-based intelligent combat systems become increasingly complex, it will become increasingly difficult to describe them quantitatively alone. In the era of informatization and intelligence, system thinking requires a reevaluation of qualitative methods, and the call to oppose the one-sided pursuit of precision and quantification in combat system research is becoming increasingly strong. Quantitative descriptions that cannot reflect the true characteristics of combat are not scientific descriptions and must be abandoned. Attention should be paid to combining qualitative and quantitative descriptions. Pay attention to the combination of deterministic description and uncertain description, and study and handle the problems of information-based intelligent combat. There are many types of uncertainty in complex systems, such as randomness, fuzziness, information incompleteness, ambiguity, and so on. Since the establishment of Newtonian mechanics, scientific research has gradually developed two parallel descriptive frameworks. One is the deterministic description represented by Newtonian mechanics, and the other is the probabilistic description developed from statistical mechanics and quantum mechanics. The overall development of modern systems thinking increasingly requires the combination of two descriptive frameworks to form a unified new framework. Mechanized warfare often exhibits procedurality and linearity, dividing into stages of operation according to the progress of the operation in time, and describing and studying the depth hierarchy according to geometric rules and shapes in space, often pursuing its determinacy and equilibrium state; The information and intelligent warfare presents non-linear, uncertain, dynamic, and complex characteristics, which can be abstracted and described according to the chaos theory, far from equilibrium state, and fuzzy theory of system thinking. Combining the description methods of certainty and uncertainty, it is necessary to seek precise methods and means in specific combat operations, and to apply the principles and methods of modern systems science to seek the expression and description of uncertainty in the overall grasp of combat.
