The supply and demand of the summer tourism market are booming, and inbound and outbound tourism continues to heat up
2025-09-02
During the summer transportation period of 2025 (July 1st to August 31st), the national civil aviation and railway transportation data showed significant growth, demonstrating a strong recovery momentum in travel. Summer tourism consumption continues to be active, with an increase in demand for summer vacations and mid to high end accommodation. At the same time, the expansion of the "first passenger" group has become a new highlight of consumption upgrading. As the National Day and Mid Autumn Festival holidays approach, travelers' travel plans are advanced, and their willingness to travel abroad and off peak travel is further strengthened. The tourism market is expected to continue its popularity. The rapid growth of "first time" passengers in civil aviation has led to a significant increase in passenger volume, especially for "first time" passengers. This summer, ticket prices on popular domestic and international routes are relatively affordable, and the cost-effectiveness of choosing to travel by plane for long haul travel is high. Tongcheng Research Institute predicts that about 6 million people will travel by plane for the first time throughout the summer, mainly children, students, and the silver haired generation. The rapid growth of first-time travelers is one of the important signs of the upgrading of mass travel consumption. Summer tourism consumption continues to be hot. Summer vacation has become an important component of summer tourism. According to Ctrip data, this summer, travel orders to popular summer destinations such as Guizhou and Yunnan increased by over 80% year-on-year, while orders to niche summer destinations such as Chifeng, Dandong, and Baishan increased by over 200% year-on-year. The high cost-effectiveness of domestic accommodation facilities has also driven the upgrading of accommodation consumption for summer trips. Consumers are not only willing to stay better during their travels, but also willing to stay for longer periods of time. According to data from Tongcheng Travel, the booking popularity of high-end hotels in popular domestic destinations during the summer has increased by over 40% year-on-year, with an overall growth rate greater than that of economy hotels. At the same time, the length of stay for overnight tourists in most destinations across the country during the summer has increased to varying degrees compared to the same period last year, and the average number of nights per guest has maintained a steady growth trend. According to data from the Civil Aviation Administration of China, the international air transportation market has also rapidly expanded this summer, with 80 countries being served and an estimated 123000 international passenger flights guaranteed for domestic and foreign airlines. This summer, popular countries for entry and exit are mainly concentrated in the traditional tourist source and destination markets of East Asia and Southeast Asia. Flights to some emerging markets and remote countries such as South Asia, Central and Western Asia, and Europe have increased significantly, with flights to countries such as Maldives, Switzerland, and Sri Lanka increasing by more than 50% year-on-year. It is worth mentioning that the number of foreign tourists entering during the summer transportation period has increased significantly. The number of visa free travelers from countries such as the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Bahrain to China has increased by over 50% year-on-year. Especially with the increasing number of foreign children and elderly tourists, group tours in the form of family trips to check-in in China have become a new hot topic this summer. According to Ctrip data, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Beijing, and Chengdu have consistently ranked among the top five inbound tourist destinations this summer, with a nearly 20% year-on-year increase in foreign tourist bookings for museum tickets. The popularity of inbound tourism and the high enthusiasm of non first tier city residents for outbound tourism have driven the growth of passenger volume on international routes during the summer, with an overall increase significantly higher than that of domestic routes. ”Cheng Chaogong, Chief Researcher of Tongcheng Research Institute, told reporters that according to flight management data, the passenger volume of civil aviation international routes increased by 26.3% year-on-year in July, faster than the 3.7% growth rate of domestic routes. Driven by the demand for summer home school travel and parent-child outbound travel among international students, the booking heat for international long haul flights during the summer is relatively high. After the rational decline in summer tourism prices due to the increase in orders during the National Day and Mid Autumn Festival, the off peak window before the peak season has appeared. The report from Lingnan Holdings' Guangzhou Travel shows that this year's National Day tourist plans and registration times have generally advanced. Since this year's Mid-Autumn Festival is located in the middle and later part of the holiday (October 6), the first batch of tourists to travel during the National Day holiday will leave from September 28 to October 1, focusing on domestic long-term tours in the form of "travel first and then reunion" or "double festivals during the journey", taking into account the journey and family reunion; The second batch of tourists will depart during the off peak period from October 3rd to 5th, mainly for "family friendly" parent-child families. The 8-day holiday has also boosted outbound tourism. According to Ctrip data, the number of people who have booked visa services for the National Day holiday in the past month has increased by nearly 30% year-on-year. According to data from Qunar Travel, as of now, the booking volume of hotels in popular countries for National Day has doubled year-on-year, and Chinese tourists have booked flights to 599 cities worldwide. After the peak summer season, many travelers choose to pick up their leftovers during the off-season in September. The reporter found on the Qunar travel app that the airfare prices for round-trip flights from Beijing to popular cities such as Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur in September are about half of the prices for flights departing on October 1st. Zhang Zhongyin, a researcher at Qunar Big Data Research Institute, told reporters that compared to last year's National Day holiday, Chinese tourists are more planned for outbound travel and book their itineraries in advance. From the perspective of ticket prices, early departure and late return "holiday sharing" travel is more cost-effective. Late return is more cost-effective than early departure, and more passengers choose to return late, driving a 1.2-fold increase in international flight bookings for October 12th compared to the same period last year, "said Zhang Zhongyin.
