In the display cabinet of the National Museum of China, there is a rusty hoe on display. Over 80 years ago, Comrade Wang Zhen used it for land reclamation in Nanniwan. Looking at this hoe, we seem to be transported back to the bustling labor scene of the Yan'an period. After the War of Resistance against Japan entered the stage of strategic stalemate, the Japanese army's crazy "mopping up", the Kuomintang die hards' blockades and serious natural disasters made the anti Japanese base areas led by the CPC difficult. In March 1941, in order to alleviate the economic difficulties in the Shaanxi Gansu Ningxia Border Region and in accordance with the instructions of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, the 359th Brigade of the Eighth Route Army went to Nanniwan, established a production committee, and implemented military reclamation and land reclamation. Captain Wang Zhen led the whole brigade to work together and fight hard. In just three years, the thorny and deserted Nanniwan was transformed into a "good Jiangnan in northern Shaanxi" with "crops everywhere and cattle and sheep everywhere". The mass production practice carried out in Nanniwan has condensed the fine tradition of the CPC leading the people's army to self-reliance and hard struggle, and has become our eternal spiritual wealth. To be self reliant and work hard, one must have the courage to fight against difficulties. At the beginning, the natural conditions in Nanniwan were extremely harsh, but the officers and soldiers of the 359th Brigade were not intimidated by the difficulties. They worked day and night to cultivate the land amidst the battle song of "one hoe and one gun, producing self-sufficiency to defend the Party Central Committee". Without a place to live, the officers and soldiers set up tents with branches and weeds; Without vegetables to eat, the officers and soldiers went up the mountain to dig wild vegetables. Relying on hard work and perseverance, the officers and soldiers of the 359th Brigade exceeded their production plan and achieved self-sufficiency in funds. In 1943, they achieved the goal of "not giving the government a grain of rice, an inch of cloth, or a penny". Self reliance and hard work require leading cadres to set an example. The good work style of the 359th Brigade is first reflected in the leading cadres setting an example. When they opened up the land in Nanniwan, they "participated in production from the brigade commander to the stableman" and "set an example for cadres, not pointing fingers". Wang Zhen took the lead in participating in the land reclamation, rising at dawn and starting to work. Even if his hands were soaked with blood and the handlebars were stained red with blood, he would not leave the front line; Chen Zongyao, known as the "Model Team Leader," worked with soldiers and hiked hundreds of miles to carry rice... The touching deeds of leading cadres who set an example greatly inspired the officers and soldiers of the 359th Brigade, inspiring them to be self reliant, work hard, and strive to be pioneers in production. Many exemplary figures emerged, effectively promoting the development of the Great Production Movement. To be self reliant and work hard, we must always adhere to diligence, thrift, and frugality. When the 359th Brigade first arrived at Nanniwan for land reclamation, facing severe natural conditions, the officers and soldiers fully promoted the fine tradition of diligence, thrift, and frugality. Lacking agricultural tools, they transform them with scrap copper and iron; Lacking clothing, they changed their old military uniforms into shorts and woven shoes with cloth strips. After achieving certain results in land reclamation and production, the officers and soldiers of the 359th Brigade still maintain their diligent and frugal nature, and do not become extravagant or wasteful just because of the improvement of material conditions. After achieving food self-sufficiency, the army still mixed sweet potatoes, pumpkins and other staple foods into the "Babaofan (Rice pudding with eight-delicious ingredients)", and insisted on the standard of "two dry and one lean" to save food. In the Shaan Gan Ning Border Region, diligence, thrift, and frugality have become the prevailing trend and have formed a fine tradition and style of the Party and the military. Nowadays, our working and living conditions have greatly improved, but we cannot lose the fine tradition and style of self-reliance and hard work. On the new journey of building a strong military, we should inherit and carry forward the spirit of Nanniwan, face various difficulties and risk challenges on the way forward, dare to fight, be good at fighting, dare to face any storm, overcome any rough waves, and make greater achievements in overcoming difficulties. Give full play to the exemplary role of leading cadres, use the power of role models to gather consensus, unite and forge ahead, drive more officers and soldiers to participate in military training and preparation, and continuously elevate the combat effectiveness of the troops to a new level. Maintain the fine tradition of diligence, thrift, and frugality, adhere to starting from small things and small details, strive to become a practitioner of strict frugality and diligence in handling affairs, make diligence, thrift, and frugality a trend in military camps, and promote the high-quality development of military construction with the style of diligence, thrift, and the spirit of hard work and struggle.
