Recently, the Tao Xingzhi Memorial Hall of Nanjing Xiaozhuang College is conducting a collection of overseas historical materials on Tao Xingzhi's resistance against Japan, aiming to find Mr. Tao Xingzhi's activities during the war and enrich the content of the collection. From July 1936 to August 1938, Tao Xingzhi traveled overseas for two years and one month, traveling to 28 countries and regions including Europe, America, Asia, and Africa, covering a distance of 108000 kilometers. He devoted himself wholeheartedly to promoting resistance against Japan and saving the country. It was this 108000 kilometer journey that measured the lofty ideals and beliefs of Chinese educators. In overseas speeches, Tao Xingzhi deeply moved scholars and politicians from various countries with his patriotic enthusiasm and adherence to national dignity. His sincere feelings also moved Norman Bethune, facilitating the feat of this international friend traveling to China and entrusting his life to the Chinese battlefield. Seeking and collecting the footprints and historical materials of Mr. Tao Xingzhi during the War of Resistance Against Japan is not only a deep tribute to the "Great Master", but also a vivid interpretation of the unique educational spirit of China, and a profound understanding of the ideal belief of "having a great self and sincerely serving the country". On September 9, 2014, General Secretary Xi Jinping pointed out during a discussion with representatives of teachers and students from Beijing Normal University: "To be a good teacher, one must have ideals and beliefs." General Secretary Xi Jinping also quoted Tao Xingzhi's words: "A thousand teachings, ten thousand teachings, teaching people to seek truth; a thousand learning, ten thousand learning, learning to be real people." The mission of a teacher is not only to impart knowledge, but also to shape the soul and cultivate personality. Ideals and beliefs are like lighthouses, guiding educators on the path of educating and nurturing students without losing their direction. Without ideals and beliefs, it is impossible to become a good teacher, let alone a 'great teacher'. Today, when we talk about teacher growth, we cannot avoid a core question: if teachers themselves lack ideals and beliefs, what can be used to light up students' hearts? The greatness of education is often reflected in educators' patriotism and integration of their own "small self" into the "big self" of the nation. Industrialist and educator Zhang Jian devoted his life to the ideal of "saving the country through education". He combined industry with education, cultivated a large number of practical talents, and promoted the development of the social economy. Principal Zhang Guimei of the new era, with selfless dedication, has led the girls deep in the mountains out of difficulties and towards the future. They demonstrated the sense of responsibility of the 'great master' by taking action to 'establish a heart for heaven and earth, and a life for the people'. Mr. Tao Xingzhi once said, "To be born is to break through the veil, and to enter a coffin is to graduate." For teachers, education is a lifelong practice. Especially in the current era, where information updates rapidly and new technologies are advancing rapidly, if teachers are only satisfied with "teaching the textbook" and only satisfied with preparing for exams, they will be left far behind by the times. Educators not only teach students to master knowledge and skills, but also guide them to broaden their horizons, explore new knowledge, encourage them to be brave in innovation, and not afraid of failure; At the same time, teachers themselves should also maintain a learning state and continuously improve their professional competence and ideological realm. Only in this way can we live up to the heavy trust of the 'great master of the new era'. Education is also a relay that influences life. Generations of 'great masters' have lit the torch of education with lofty ideals and beliefs, illuminating the path of teachers and the hearts of students. We look forward to more teachers in the new era taking Mr. Tao Xingzhi as an example, inheriting the spirit of the 'Great Master', and using their ideals and beliefs to lift up our better future.
