The by elections for the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Election Committee will be held on the 7th. 28 candidates from 6 constituencies will compete for 21 seats, while 72 candidates from 22 constituencies who did not compete will be automatically elected as members of the Election Committee. In addition, 10 members of the Election Committee are nominated by 8 designated groups. The Chairman of the Electoral Affairs Commission of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Lu Qikang, stated that a total of 3534 voters cast their ballots in this by election, with a cumulative voter turnout of 97.33%. The new electronic counting system has been used for the first time in the by elections of the Election Committee's sectoral groups, and the process has been smooth. The Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Carrie Lam, issued a statement on the same day stating that the Election Committee is composed of 1500 members from 40 sectoral groups, with broad representativeness and in line with the principle of balanced participation. It plays an important role in improving the electoral system and implementing the principle of "patriots governing Hong Kong". Members of the Election Committee will be able to nominate candidates for the 8th Legislative Council election and vote to elect 40 Legislative Council members from the Election Committee sector on December 7th of this year. We expect all members of the Election Committee to fulfill their duties and contribute to the stable and far-reaching implementation of the "One Country, Two Systems" policy. (New Society)
