To celebrate the 55th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Italy, the world's first musical adaptation of the poem of the same name by Italian Renaissance poet Dante, "Divine Comedy," was staged in Hong Kong from September 4th to 7th, bringing audiences a visual and auditory feast spanning seven centuries. This musical is the first stage work to interpret the poem "Divine Comedy" through music. The work explores profound themes such as the meaning of life through rich artistic techniques, integrating the beauty of Italian traditional melodies, the grandeur of symphonies, and the dynamic rhythm of modern musicals in music. It also uses 3D holographic projection technology to create an immersive multi-level stage atmosphere. Italian Consul General in Hong Kong, Camille, stated at a pre performance exchange meeting on the 6th that Hong Kong is an important window for cultural exchange between China and Italy, and he looks forward to this artistic feast adding new footnotes to the friendship between China and Italy through borderless cultural integration. He revealed to reporters that in the future, Hong Kong and Italian cities such as Rome will cooperate to hold various cultural exchange activities, including dance, opera, interior design, and sports competitions. Cui Jianchun, a special envoy of the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, told reporters that holding a performance of "Divine Comedy" in Hong Kong has special significance. As a "super contact" and "super value-added person", Hong Kong can not only build a bridge for cultural exchange between the East and the West, but also help integrate cultural and artistic resources between the mainland and Hong Kong, continuously enriching Hong Kong's connotation as a center for cultural and artistic exchanges between China and foreign countries. The producer, President of the Italian Football Association and Vice President of the European Football Association, Gabriel Gravina, expressed his hope to use musical theater to showcase the profound Dante's ideas and the richness of Italian culture, while absorbing inspiration from traditional Chinese literature, drama, and other cultures to achieve a two-way cultural integration. He hopes to promote joint production and art training through this tour, and promote the diverse integration of tradition and innovation. Ms. Li, an audience member, expressed that the flowing and interactive stage space, intertwined light and shadow effects, as well as the richly layered character development and musical performance, left her deeply fascinated and impressed. On that day, student representatives from the well-known patriotic and Hong Kong education institution, Hong Kong Pui Ching College, presented flowers to the actors. Han Fangming, President of the Chahar Society who supports participation in activities related to the 55th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Italy, stated that in the 55 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Italy, there have been fruitful achievements in cultural exchanges and economic and trade cooperation. This opera performance of "Divine Comedy" is a new highlight of cultural exchange between China and Italy. We hope that Hong Kong can continue to promote cooperation between China and Italy in various fields such as art and economy in the future. It is reported that the drama has attracted over 2 million viewers worldwide since its premiere in 2007, and will tour China for the first time in 2025. (New Society)
