On September 8th, the South China Sea Bureau of the Ministry of Natural Resources, together with the Department of Natural Resources of Guangdong Province, the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, the Environmental Protection Department of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, the Environmental Protection Bureau of the Macao Special Administrative Region, the Maritime and Water Affairs Bureau of the Macao Special Administrative Region, the Shenzhen Ocean Development Bureau and other departments, jointly released the "2024 Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area Marine Ecological Status Report" (referred to as the "Report"). The report comprehensively showcases the phased achievements of Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao working together to protect the marine ecology of the Greater Bay Area, and also demonstrates the series of practical explorations by the Ministry of Natural Resources to strengthen the integration of departments and provinces, promote regional coordination, and actively serve major national strategies. The report shows that the overall marine ecological status in the Greater Bay Area is stable and improving, with coral reefs and mangrove ecosystems being mainly in good condition, while estuarine and bay ecosystems are basically stable. Rare marine organisms such as Chinese white dolphins and sea turtles have been effectively protected. In recent years, Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao have closely followed the national strategic positioning of the Greater Bay Area, strengthened land sea coordination, river sea linkage, and coordinated efforts to continuously carry out marine ecological basic investigations and research, improve management policies and systems, promote the implementation of restoration projects, and strive to create a new pattern of marine ecological governance in the Greater Bay Area. The report shows that through institutional innovation, technological empowerment, and cross-border cooperation, the Greater Bay Area has initially established a marine ecological collaborative protection system covering three regions, exploring a sustainable development path that integrates economic development and ecological protection for mutual promotion.
