The 80th General Debate of the United Nations General Assembly kicked off on the 23rd at the United Nations headquarters in New York. In his speech, UN Secretary General Guterres stated that looking ahead to the global situation, the international community must make key choices around the following five aspects: peace based on international law, human dignity and rights, climate justice, making technology serve humanity, and strengthening the role of the United Nations in the 21st century. On September 23rd, at the United Nations headquarters in New York, UN Secretary General Guterres delivered a speech at the opening ceremony of the 80th United Nations General Assembly general debate. Xinhua News Agency reporter Li Rui emphasized that the principles of the United Nations are under siege. The pillars of peace and progress are crumbling under the heavy pressure of impunity, inequality, and apathy. The world is increasingly moving towards multipolarity, but the lack of effective multilateral mechanisms for multipolarity will inevitably lead to chaos. The people of the world long for a better future. The choices faced by the international community concern the life and death of millions of people. When elaborating on the five key choices, Guterres emphasized that 'peace is our primary obligation' and human rights are the foundation of peace. He gave an example that no reason can justify the collective punishment of the Palestinian people and the systematic destruction of the Gaza Strip. It is necessary to immediately implement a permanent ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, release all detained persons, and allow unimpeded humanitarian rescue operations. We must persistently promote the 'two-state solution', which is the only feasible solution to achieve lasting peace in the Middle East region. Guterres also said that clean energy and low-carbon transformation have presented feasible paths, but the pace of progress is insufficient and the distribution is uneven. Artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies are bringing profound changes and must guide technology to benefit humanity. Faced with the current multiple crises, the United Nations is more important than ever before, and its role needs to be strengthened through reform. The 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly was presided over by President Berk at the opening ceremony. In her speech, she stated that the 80th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations should have been a time worth celebrating, but the current world situation is alarming, with "conflicts and tragedies dominating the headlines, and more suffering being overlooked in news reports". In response to the voices questioning the United Nations, Berk said, 'It is not the UN Charter that has failed, nor the UN itself.' The power of the Charter depends on the determination of member states to uphold it and their willingness to hold violators accountable. The United Nations General Assembly is the main deliberative, supervisory, and review body of the United Nations, composed of all member states. The conference holds regular meetings from September to December each year, usually divided into two stages. The first stage is a general debate, and the second stage discusses and deliberates on various agenda items. The theme of this session of the United Nations General Assembly is "Joining Hands for Progress: Promoting Peace, Development, and Human Rights for 80 Years, Building on the Past and Opening Up the Future, and Composing a New Chapter".
