Weaving structure provides new ideas for the design of soft robots

2025-09-28

On September 25th, it was learned from Jiangnan University that the team led by Sun Fengxin from the School of Textile Science and Engineering proposed a design strategy for a multifunctional deformation and mimetic camouflage soft robot based on textile structure metasurface weaving. The relevant research results were published in the international journal Advanced Fiber Materials. Sun Fengxin introduced that the reversible deformation of soft biological tissue systems enables them to have the ability of continuous movement, agile manipulation, and adaptive camouflage. However, replicating this skill using artificially synthesized materials is not simple. The research team utilized the "coil stitch programming" method in textile science to achieve precise engineering design of knitted structures by adjusting the geometric arrangement of yarn coils. This method relies solely on structural design and does not require material replacement to endow fabrics with different elasticity and deformation modes, thereby accurately controlling the "transformation" process of soft robots, significantly improving the mechanical control accuracy, design flexibility, and environmental adaptability of soft robots. Based on this principle, Sun Fengxin's team has developed a flexible knitting robot with adjustable stiffness and elasticity, which can complete complex surface deformation and demonstrate various application prototypes such as multi-mode deformation robots, fluid driven infrared stealth flexible crawling robots, and biomimetic mimetic camouflage systems. This achievement will open up a new low-cost, scalable, and customized path for the development of multi form and camouflage soft robots, which are expected to be applied in personalized wearable devices, adaptive camouflage, human-computer interaction, and intelligent temperature controlled clothing in the future.
