Canadian overseas Chinese leader Wang Wenkang: Using Cantonese cuisine as a medium to pave the way for exchanges and cooperation at home and abroad

There are 60 million overseas Chinese spread across the world map. No matter where they are, they care about their country and inherit Chinese culture, spread the voice of China, and promote exchanges between China and foreign countries in their own ways. Overseas Chinese are not only active participants in economic and social development, but also "overseas forces" who step forward at critical moments. Among them, Wang Wenkang, who holds multiple positions such as overseas committee member of the China Overseas Chinese Federation, standing committee member of the Guangdong Provincial Overseas Chinese Federation Committee, vice chairman of the Meizhou Overseas Chinese Federation, and chairman of the All Canada Hakka Association, is a representative of overseas Chinese who has lived abroad for many years. As a Hakka, Wang Wenkang has always adhered to the spirit of hard work, perseverance, and diligent learning since childhood. In his youth, he started from his hometown Meizhou and went to Guangzhou to start his own business; Afterwards, he seized the opportunity of the times and went to Canada to work hard, gradually moving towards a broader world. Nowadays, Wang Wenkang not only continues to expand his business territory, but also actively engages in overseas Chinese affairs, committed to building a bridge for economic and cultural exchanges between China and foreign countries. From personal struggle to social service, from public welfare to cultural exchange, Wang Wenkang has been down-to-earth for decades, closely linking personal growth with the narrative of his family and country. He believes that overseas Chinese should establish a stable career overseas, and also connect the advantages of overseas with the development needs of their hometown, supporting the development and construction of the motherland and hometown. Wang Wenkang's Journey from Meizhou to Vancouver: Meizhou City in Guangdong Province is the spiritual homeland of Hakka people worldwide. For thousands of years, it has nurtured the Hakka cultural system of "loving the country and hometown, promoting harmony among the people, and valuing peace". In 1966, Wang Wenkang was born in this Hakka land that carries a rich history and culture. Under the influence of Hakka culture, the Hakka spirit of "perseverance and hard work" has become the foundation of his life. In the late 1970s, the Third Plenum of the Eleventh Central Committee was successfully held, ushering in the spring breeze of reform and opening up in China, and gradually introducing economic reform policies. Wang Wenkang keenly seized this historical opportunity. In 1985, he came to Guangzhou to work hard and embarked on the path of business and entrepreneurship. Guangzhou has the reputation of being a 'millennium commercial city' with a strong commercial atmosphere. As a native Meizhou Hakka, I consider Guangzhou a blessed place for personal career development. "Wang Wenkang introduced," At first, I worked as an artist in a craft and art factory, but later started a painting factory and exported my paintings abroad. With the changes in the market, I shifted my paintings from export to domestic sales and quickly opened up the market. "After accumulating his first bucket of gold, Wang Wenkang began to think about how to transform and achieve sustainable development. Afterwards, he established a color printing company; Soon after, he responded to the "Basket of Vegetables Project" and opened a farm to enter the livestock industry; In 2004, Wang Wenkang invested in the construction of a cultural industry park. After years of hard work, Wang Wenkang has always been concerned about the Cantonese cuisine industry that he loves. I really love the cuisine of my hometown and the cultural connotations behind it, which laid the foundation for my future investment in the catering industry. At the same time, the family's tradition of "going global" is subtly influencing him. According to Wang Wenkang, his ancestors went to Singapore, Indonesia and other places for business. Under the influence of the environment, exploring new paths of development seems to be an inevitable part of one's bloodline. In the early 2000s, Wang Wenkang traveled to Vancouver and used it as an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of multiculturalism. Vancouver is an important city for Chinese communities in North America. During his stay, Wang Wenkang observed that although Chinese cuisine is popular in the area, it is often limited to the Chinatown area and daily consumption level. High end dining venues that truly represent Chinese dining etiquette, cultural depth, and service standards are very scarce. With his love for Cantonese cuisine and determination to "create a new career", Wang Wenkang founded his own catering brand in Vancouver. Investing and starting a business in a foreign land is not an easy task, as language communication, policy differences, and ways of thinking are all difficulties that Wang Wenkang needs to overcome. He stated that in the early stages of entrepreneurship, many foreigners' understanding of Chinese cuisine remained at the level of everyday and convenient, and did not recognize the profound cultural heritage behind it. The configuration of Western cuisine is usually relatively simple, while Chinese cuisine is different. One ingredient can present multiple flavors, which many foreigners are not familiar with and have not tried. Therefore, opening a Chinese restaurant in Vancouver is challenging, but it also has a broad market space, "he further explained. Wang Wenkang's core concept in promoting Chinese cuisine is to exchange ideas with chefs who make authentic Cantonese dishes. He strictly controls the selection of ingredients, cooking techniques, and serving to ensure that the dishes maintain the best taste, flavor, and form. At the same time, he gradually promoted Chinese cuisine culture to mainstream Western audiences by delivering it to private parties and community events. A few years later, with the accumulation of funds and experience, Wang Wenkang continued to expand his business territory. He began to constantly seek change, gradually developing cross-border food trade while promoting Guangfu cuisine to the international stage. We need to not only prepare every dish well, but also promote Chinese culinary culture and tell Chinese stories well. After years of hard work in Canada, Wang Wenkang has made more and more Chinese and foreign friends. In the future, he hopes to introduce more foreign friends to a real and comprehensive China through windows and platforms such as overseas Chinese associations and Cantonese restaurants. Despite living abroad for many years, Wang Wenkang still keeps a close eye on the development and changes of his motherland, despite the fact that his family and country share the same frequency and the hearts of overseas Chinese relay. The country is getting better and better on the road of reform and opening up, and has also created a favorable business environment for overseas Chinese through the introduction of supportive policies. "Around 2010, with deep affection for his hometown and the belief of" hoping to contribute to the development of the motherland, "Wang Wenkang began to gradually shift his career focus back to China. After returning to China, Wang Wenkang continued to make extensive investments in the catering industry and actively participated in the construction of the "Hundred, Thousand, and Ten Thousand Project", constantly contributing wisdom and strength to the development of the motherland and Sino foreign economic and trade cooperation. Parallel to his career is his investment in the overseas Chinese community. His understanding of "overseas Chinese" goes far beyond economic and trade exchanges, and is also reflected in cultural dissemination. In Wang Wenkang's view, overseas Chinese already have extensive influence and energy. Through diverse platforms and channels, overseas Chinese can gather information, form connections, and play a role at critical moments. Wang Wenkang made efforts to further consolidate the dispersed forces, working together to serve his hometown and promote economic, trade, and cultural exchanges between China and foreign countries, demonstrating the unique role of "overseas Chinese power". For many years, Wang Wenkang has taken the principle of "overseas Chinese must step forward at critical moments" as a code of action and put it into practice, committed to leveraging the power of overseas Chinese to contribute to the public welfare and charity cause of the motherland. During disasters such as the 1998 Yangtze River flood and the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake, Wang Wenkang was the first to donate money and goods, actively participating in various disaster relief activities; At the initial stage of the COVID-19 in 2020, in the face of the shortage of masks in China, he mobilized different channels and purchased materials to send masks to the places needed by the motherland at the first time. Wang Wenkang (second from the right) donated materials during the COVID-19. At the same time, Wang Wenkang was very concerned about the development of his hometown and often supported the construction of his hometown. As early as the 1990s, he began donating computers and building teaching buildings to schools in his hometown. In recent years, he has donated materials and built pavilions for the nursing home in Songyuan Town, continuously contributing to the education and public welfare undertakings in his hometown. In 2024, Meizhou suffered a historic flood, with severe flooding and transportation disruptions. As the Vice Chairman of the Meizhou Overseas Chinese Federation, Wang Wenkang collaborated with the Meizhou Overseas Chinese Federation to quickly raise cash and supplies, and delivered the first batch of rescue supplies to the affected towns and villages through local organizations. Wang Wenkang (third from the left in the front row) participates in economic and trade exchange activities. In addition, overseas, Wang Wenkang has always regarded "bridging" as his responsibility, closely connecting resources, networks, and relationships between China and foreign countries. In Vancouver, he is also active as a "civilian diplomat", often receiving delegations from China, bridging the gap, and promoting economic, trade, and cultural exchanges. On the other hand, he actively promotes economic and cultural exchanges between China and Canada, building bridges for communication and cooperation at home and abroad. Since 2000, he has organized more than 200 overseas Chinese to visit Guangzhou, Chaoshan, Meizhou and other places every two years. Many overseas Chinese have not returned to their hometowns for decades. When they stand in front of China's high-rise buildings and witness the rapid development of China after the reform and opening up, they all marvel at the tremendous changes of the times. In Wang Wenkang's view, such "visible changes" have become the most powerful testimony to "telling the story of China well". Wang Wenkang (fifth from the left in the middle row) participated in the "Guangdong Provincial Political Consultative Conference Overseas Chinese Affairs Committee Delegation Visits Vancouver" event. When China faces complex public opinion and security issues overseas, Wang Wenkang has also been at the forefront many times. Let's work together, unite as one, and at critical moments, overseas Chinese must step forward, "said Wang Wenkang. This type of flexible people to people diplomacy is not obvious, but it effectively maintains the national image and public order. Wang Wenkang sees these as the mission and responsibility of the overseas Chinese community - expressing support in a lawful and compliant manner overseas, timely coordinating assistance in times of crisis, and enhancing mutual understanding through cultural exchanges in daily life. From catering to international trade, from overseas Chinese work to giving back to society, Wang Wenkang connects his personal resources with overseas Chinese platforms, bringing overseas resources into his hometown and bringing the stories and development of his hometown to the world. We are always proud of our motherland. Over the years, Wang Wenkang's active actions and outstanding contributions in the field of overseas Chinese affairs have repeatedly received invitations to participate in national commemorative conferences and military parades. This sense of honor has become another force in his heart, driving him to constantly move forward on the path of fulfilling his duties and missions as overseas Chinese. According to Wang Wenkang, so far, he has had the honor to witness four important moments of the motherland: the "70th Anniversary of the Victory of the Chinese People's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti Fascist War" in 2015, the "70th Anniversary of the Founding of the People's Republic of China Conference" in 2019, the "100th Anniversary of the Founding of the CPC Conference" in 2021, and the "80th Anniversary of the Victory of the Chinese People's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti Fascist War" in 2025. Speaking of these experiences, his words were still full of excitement and pride: "When the parade team passed Tiananmen Square, I felt shocked and proud. The neat footsteps, loud slogans, and advanced weapons and equipment are symbols of a country's self-confidence and strength." Wang Wenkang participated in the "Celebration of the 100th Anniversary of the founding of the CPC Conference". In Wang Wenkang's view, being able to experience such a scene as a representative of overseas Chinese is in itself the motherland's high recognition and trust of overseas Chinese. He said that the development achievements of the motherland over the past few decades have attracted worldwide attention, from economic takeoff to technological progress, from improving people's lives to enhancing national status. Every time he stands in front of Tiananmen Square in Beijing, he is deeply moved - "Our generation of overseas Chinese has witnessed the gradual progress of the motherland from poverty and weakness to prosperity and strength." This personal feeling has also become the driving force for him to continue telling the story of China well and unite the strength of the overseas Chinese community. Nowadays, the construction of the Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area has provided Wang Wenkang with a new direction for development. As a major national strategy, the Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area has become one of the most open and economically vibrant regions in China. In recent years, from infrastructure interconnectivity to politics in fields such as finance, science and technology innovation, and cultural tourism
