A late 'red file'
2025-09-30
Finally, the battle stories of our predecessors have been fully restored! Now, our company's' red genealogy 'has truly been continued! "Recently, at the Yishui Revolutionary Martyrs Cemetery in Shandong, looking at rows of tombstones engraved with the names of the martyrs, the eyes of the officers and soldiers of the 4th Company of a certain brigade of the 80th Group Army became moist. This day has been eagerly awaited by the officers and soldiers of the company for many years. Not long ago, the fourth batch of national level anti Japanese war memorial facilities and sites, as well as the list of famous anti Japanese martyrs and hero groups, were officially announced, and the title of "Wai Tou Gu 85 Warriors" was prominently listed. Seeing this news, the officers and soldiers of the 4th Infantry Division were greatly encouraged. The predecessor of the 4th Company of the Armored Infantry was the 2nd Regiment, 1st Battalion, 2nd Company of the Luzhong Military Region, which participated in the Waitougu Resistance War that year. Company officials explained that the history of the company only records the general process of the battle, without specific details, let alone a list of sacrifices made by our predecessors. Taking the release of the fourth batch of anti Japanese hero group list as an opportunity, with the help of the brigade, the officers and soldiers of the 4th Infantry Company contacted military history experts to sort out historical materials, verify time nodes, and repeatedly verify with the Yishui County Veterans Affairs Bureau and the County Party History Research Department. The Shandong Provincial Party History Research Office confirmed and restored the process of the Waitougu resistance war, and found the list of 85 brave warriors. Subsequently, the brigade selected 8 officers and soldiers as representatives, led by Zhang Liangnan, the head of the propaganda department, to cross thousands of miles and set foot on this land soaked with the blood of our ancestors. The staff of the local Veterans Affairs Bureau, nearby villagers, and some descendants of martyrs also rushed to the Martyrs Cemetery upon hearing the news and "opened" this late "red file" together with the officers and soldiers. Many relics of martyrs were also unearthed on the battlefield when they tilted their heads. ”When visiting the Yishui Revolution Memorial Hall, Ge Shuwei, the director of the cemetery management office, pointed to a display cabinet and introduced it. The cultural relics such as pipes with clear patterns and rusty shell casings in the display cabinet take the officers and soldiers back to more than 80 years ago. On February 25, 1943, more than 3000 Japanese puppet troops surrounded the Yibei base area. Faced with the swarming enemy, Wang Zigu, the commander of the 1st Battalion of the 2nd Regiment of the Luzhong Military Region, decided to lead his 2nd Company to intercept the enemy and ordered the 3rd Company to escort the villagers to move. According to the battle plan, Company 2 attracted the Japanese puppet army to the top of the Waitougu Mountain in Zhanggeng Village. Waitougu has an altitude of 384.9 meters, with three cliffs like knives and axes, and only one side has a gentle slope. Faced with the fierce enemy attack, the officers and soldiers of Company 2 bravely and tenaciously repelled wave after wave of enemy attacks. The battle lasted for more than 6 hours and resulted in the death and injury of over 200 Japanese and puppet soldiers. The next morning, Meng Zhaoqun, the instructor of Company 2 who had gone to the group for a meeting, rushed back and quietly went up the mountain with the villagers to clean up the battlefield. Blood stained the entire mountaintop red, "said Geng Jiatai, a 98 year old villager and former member of the old branch, who witnessed this battle. He recalled with tears in his eyes, 'It was so tragic. When the soldiers of the company sacrificed, some held guns in combat positions, while others were blown to pieces. There was also money under a stone with the words' Party dues' written on it...' 'They sacrificed heroically to cover the people, and they were our great benefactors...' The smoke of gunpowder dissipated, and the villagers tearfully carried the bodies of the martyrs to a piece of farmland at the south end of the village for burial. Afterwards, every year during the Spring Festival and Qingming Festival, local villagers spontaneously sweep the graves of the martyrs. In order to provide these martyrs with a better resting place, they were relocated to the Yishui Revolutionary Martyrs Cemetery in 2015. In this battle, of the 85 brave warriors, except for 3 who went missing and 1 who survived by jumping off a cliff, all others sacrificed heroically. After the war, the Luzhong Military Region awarded the banner of "one person, one gun, fight to the end" to the 2nd company, and selected an excellent combat team from each company in the entire regiment to reorganize the 2nd company. The newly formed 2nd Company fully utilized the spirit of the "85 Warriors with crooked heads" to continue fighting. Later, they participated in the Liberation War and the Korean War, experiencing more than 160 battles. They were successively awarded honorary titles such as "Battle Hero Company" and "Hero Model Company" by their superiors, and advanced platoon collectives such as "Battle Model Platoon" and "Breakthrough Water Distribution Tank First Class" emerged. Green mountains bury loyal bones, and time shines on heroic souls. As they were about to bid farewell to the martyrs, the eyes of the officers and soldiers were filled with reluctance. Niu Xiaofeng, the second level staff sergeant of the company, holding the list of martyrs who died in the fight against Crouching Head Gu, said: "Please rest assured, seniors! We will train hard and make new contributions for the company." Now, this heroic company has transformed from a traditional infantry to an information-based armored infantry, and has been rated as a military training model company, an advanced grass-roots party organization, and a "four iron" exemplary organization for many times.
