Global university rankings released, Hong Kong maintains 5 universities among the world's top 100

The latest 2026 World University Rankings released by Times Higher Education in the UK show that Hong Kong universities continue to rank among the top, with five universities making it into the top 100 in the world. A spokesperson for the Education Bureau of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government stated on the 9th that the ranking results of Hong Kong universities are encouraging, fully recognizing the achievements of the Hong Kong higher education sector in striving for excellence and strength, and witnessing the significant progress made by the SAR government in building Hong Kong into an international hub for higher education. The spokesperson stated that according to the ranking, eight universities in Hong Kong that have received funding from the University Grants Committee are listed, with the University of Hong Kong rising two places to 33rd globally, the Chinese University of Hong Kong rising three places to 41st, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology rising eight places to 58th, the City University of Hong Kong rising three places to 75th, and the Hong Kong Polytechnic University rising one place to 83rd. Hong Kong Baptist University has been upgraded from Group 251 to 300 to Group 201 to 250. The Education University of Hong Kong and Lingnan University are new to the list, with the Education University of Hong Kong ranking 195th and Lingnan University in groups 301-350. The President of the University of Hong Kong, Zhang Xiang, stated that the university will continue to uphold the spirit of pursuing excellence, fulfill its mission as a top global institution through top-notch research and innovative knowledge exchange, and make greater contributions to the high-quality development of Hong Kong and the country. The President of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Lu Yuming, stated that this ranking reflects the continuous progress of the university in teaching, research, and internationalization. The university is committed to cultivating future leaders with a global perspective, academic excellence, and a desire to give back to society. The President of the Education University of Hong Kong, Li Zijian, stated that the university has participated in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings for the first time, ranking 195th. The university will continue to pursue excellence, cultivate future talents with positive values and vision, and make greater contributions to the country and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. Qin Sizhao, President of Lingnan University, stated that the university has made significant progress in research output and paper citation influence in recent years, and is committed to becoming a leading research-oriented liberal arts university in the digital age.
