Recently, the International Department of People's Daily and the Global Times Research Institute jointly released the "Vitality Asia Pacific -16 National Opinion Survey Report in the Asia Pacific Region". The report shows that the people in the Asia Pacific region generally agree that the Asia Pacific economies are a community of shared interests and a community of shared destiny, with both prosperity and loss. They recognize the positive role played by the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation in promoting regional economic development and other fields. Most respondents believe that China's development experience is worth learning from and look forward to all parties working together to build a vibrant, harmonious, and prosperous Asia Pacific family. Among the 21 member economies of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation, this survey comprehensively considered the economic aggregate, population size, and the operability of poll sampling. Sixteen representative Asia Pacific countries were selected, and a total of 9077 valid questionnaires were collected. The report comprehensively presents the distinct demands of the people in the Asia Pacific region for open cooperation and multilateralism, providing solid public support for promoting the construction of an Asia Pacific community with a shared future. Cooperation and win-win results inject vitality into regional development. The Asia Pacific region accounts for one-third of the world's population, over 60% of the world's total economic output, and nearly half of the world's total trade volume, making it the most dynamic growth zone in the global economy. As a pioneer in building an open world economy, the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) has gradually developed into the highest level, widest range, and most influential economic cooperation mechanism in the Asia Pacific region over the past 30 years. It has played an important role in enhancing regional economic integration and leading economic globalization. The report shows that 85% of respondents recognize the positive role played by APEC in promoting regional economic development, social progress, and improving people's livelihoods. Over 80% of respondents believe that their countries have benefited from development cooperation under the APEC framework, including obtaining "more international cooperation" (44%), "more development opportunities" (37%), and "more advanced technologies" (35%). Currently, the world has entered a new period of turbulence and change, with unilateralism and protectionism spreading. Asia Pacific cooperation is facing severe challenges of either advancing or falling behind. Whether to open up or close directly affects whether the Asia Pacific region can achieve sustainable growth. According to polls, building an open and inclusive Asia Pacific cooperation pattern meets the expectations of the majority of people in the region - more than half of the respondents believe that their country's economic development is moving towards "more open cooperation", and 75% of the respondents support their country's more active and in-depth participation in various cooperation under the framework of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation. Huang Zaihao, President of the Korea Institute for Global Strategic Cooperation, believes that the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) has made important contributions to promoting regional trade and investment liberalization and facilitation, promoting mutual benefit among member economies, and enhancing the interests and well-being of the people in the region. Through high-level policy communication and mechanism coordination, members have gathered consensus on a series of major issues, strengthened mutual trust, effectively resolved major risks and challenges of regional concern, and enhanced the effectiveness of cooperation. From the early Bogor Goals to the Putrajaya Vision, the cooperation areas of APEC have rapidly expanded from traditional trade and investment liberalization and facilitation, economic and technological cooperation, to digital economy, innovation, green and low-carbon issues with high-quality growth as the core, which is in line with the interests and demands of the vast majority of members. ”Liu Chenyang, Director of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation Research Center at Nankai University and Vice President of the China Pacific Economic Cooperation National Committee, stated that currently, small and medium-sized economies and developing economies urgently need to obtain development momentum through regional cooperation, seek opportunities to narrow the development gap and bridge the digital divide, and the advantages of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation are particularly significant in this regard. The survey results show that over 80% of respondents expressed willingness or consideration to participate in vocational and educational training and exchange programs established by the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation. Professor Kim Jeon ho from the Department of Politics and Diplomacy at Tan guk University in South Korea believes that this is a positive signal. "In the current international situation, enhancing personnel exchanges and communication between countries, especially in the fields of media and youth, plays an important role in increasing trust, dispelling doubts, and promoting people to people exchanges. One of the major advantages and characteristics of APEC is that it has embarked on a path of respecting differences and seeking win-win cooperation. ”Wei Jianguo, a member of the Senior Expert Advisory Committee of the China International Economic Exchange Center, pointed out that compared to other regional cooperation organizations, there are significant differences among members of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) in terms of economic size, development level, and development capacity. This differentiation also makes APEC more inclusive and diverse. The survey results show that about 70% of respondents believe that the principles of voluntary, negotiated, and non binding cooperation are applicable to current economic cooperation in the Asia Pacific region. Wei Jianguo believes that this flexible and pragmatic principle is conducive to all economies seeking common interests through full communication and consultation, and working together towards a common goal through win-win cooperation. The role of co creating and co building China has been widely recognized. As an important economy in the Asia Pacific region, China has always adhered to rooting in, building and benefiting the Asia Pacific. Since joining the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), China has steadfastly promoted high-level opening up to the outside world, deepened practical cooperation with other members in areas such as trade and investment, innovative development, and green transformation, maintained stable and smooth regional industrial and supply chains through practical actions, shared development concepts and governance plans with an open attitude, and made important contributions to the long-term stability and economic growth of the Asia Pacific region. According to a survey, nearly 60% of respondents affirmed that China has played an important role in promoting sustainable growth and prosperity in the Asia Pacific economy; Nearly 50% of the respondents believe that China is an important driving force for economic growth in Asia. Carlos Aquino, Director of the Center for Asian Studies at the National University of San Marcos in Peru, stated that China actively promotes the construction of regional economic cooperation mechanisms and advocates for concepts such as mutual benefit, win-win cooperation, and openness, which are increasingly deeply rooted in people's hearts. China's initiative to jointly build the "the Belt and Road" is highly consistent with APEC's connectivity blueprint, providing new opportunities for regional countries in infrastructure construction, green transformation, digital economy and other fields. "China's commitment to stable growth and opening up has provided important confidence support for the economic development of the Asia Pacific, especially in the current situation of rising uncertainty in the world economy." China insists on promoting high-quality development, and Chinese path to modernization provides broad opportunities for the common development of all parties in the region. The survey results show that 83% of respondents believe that China's development experience in multiple fields such as economy, society, culture, ecology, and technology is worth learning from for their own country. Against the backdrop of multiple challenges, the development of the Asia Pacific economy is relatively stable, and China's stable development plays a particularly crucial supporting role, "said Chen Fengying, a researcher at the China Institute of Modern International Relations. China is sharing more opportunities brought by high-quality development with Asia Pacific economies through high-level opening up. Whether it is the destination selection of Chinese citizens for outbound tourism or the gradual promotion of visa free policies between China and neighboring countries, they have directly driven the economic vitality of relevant countries. China's development experience is based on its own practice and has strong adaptability to countries in the Asia Pacific region, which has practical reference significance for regional development. Deepening cooperation between Thailand and China will provide development opportunities for Thailand. ”Vice Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Thai House of Lords, Chibu, stated that China is one of the most important participants in Asia Pacific cooperation. As the world's second-largest economy, China provides cooperation and development opportunities for the Asia Pacific region through its own development, and promotes common prosperity through mutual benefit and win-win outcomes. Thailand hopes to continuously strengthen pragmatic cooperation between the two countries in areas such as digital technology, technological innovation, clean energy, and connectivity within bilateral and multilateral frameworks. The APEC Putrajaya Vision clearly proposes to build an open, dynamic, resilient, and peaceful Asia Pacific community by 2040, achieving common prosperity for the people of the Asia Pacific region and future generations. The report shows that 70% of respondents express expectations for this. The people in the Asia Pacific region have a broad consensus on building an open Asia Pacific, inclusive Asia Pacific, green Asia Pacific, and digital Asia Pacific, and generally look forward to further deepening cooperation among members under the framework of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation. In the field of trade and investment, respondents are most looking forward to reducing tariffs and promoting trade and investment facilitation; In the field of digital economy, cooperation between network security and 5G/communication technology is more favored; In the field of innovation cooperation, new energy technology and medical health are the most concerned; In terms of sustainable development, there is a strong demand for cooperation between clean energy and low-carbon technologies, addressing climate change, and biodiversity conservation. Qibu stated that as an important economic growth engine in the Asia Pacific region and even globally, the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) is highly anticipated to further promote regional development and cooperation. He hopes that all members can reach more consensus within the APEC framework, jointly uphold multilateralism, promote the construction of an open world economy, and contribute to building a more prosperous and dynamic Asia Pacific economy. The 32nd APEC Economic Leaders' Informal Meeting is about to be held in South Korea. Yu Shougen, Director of the Korea East Asia Institute and President of the Korea China Global Association, stated that APEC is a model of regional economic cooperation and hopes that in the future, the organization will not only continue to support economic growth in the Asia Pacific region, but also become an inclusive platform for promoting regional social progress and sustainable development. South Korea and China are close neighbors with intertwined interests and partners in jointly maintaining stability and development in Asia. I hope that the two countries can expand the depth and breadth of cooperation through the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation platform, and jointly depict the future of sustainable development in the Asia Pacific region. In 2026, China will host the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation for the third time. The interviewed public expects all parties to discuss topics such as poverty reduction, green development and climate change response, promoting stable and smooth global industrial and supply chains, digital economy and artificial intelligence governance, and innovative development, and jointly plan for the future. Liu Chenyang stated that the current international situation is intertwined with turmoil, unilateralism and protectionism are clearly on the rise, and there is a need for members to "unite and warm up". For many years, China has always played a leading role in Asia Pacific cooperation. China has a huge market volume, which can provide resource support for regional cooperation based on market advantages, and deepen industrial and supply chain synergy with strong industrial capabilities. Therefore, all parties have expectations for China's role in promoting the integration process of the Asia Pacific region. We are looking forward to China hosting the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meeting in 2026. ”Aquino expressed the hope that the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) will focus on issues such as inclusive growth, digital connectivity, green transformation, and people to people exchanges, further consolidating the cooperation consensus of the Asia Pacific family and promoting the construction of an Asia Pacific community with a shared future. This not only aligns with the common interests of all parties in the Asia Pacific region, but also injects new momentum and confidence into the world economy. (New Society)
