At the expert argumentation meeting on the archaeological excavation results of Tangbei Site held recently, the experts unanimously agreed that the Maqiao culture, "Houmaqiao culture", Western Zhou Dynasty, Spring and Autumn Period and other pre-qin relics found at Tangbei Site in Suzhou, Jiangsu, presented a relatively complete cultural development sequence of the Bronze Age in the eastern part of the Taihu Lake Lake, filling the sequence gap of this period; The remains of the "Houmaqiao Culture" unearthed from this site are typical and provide important evidence for exploring the origin and formation of the Wu Yue culture. The Tangbei Site is located in Guoxiang Street, Wuzhong District, Suzhou City, Jiangsu Province, with a total existing area of approximately 230000 square meters. It was discovered by the Suzhou Institute of Archaeology during the "archaeological pre construction" work on the site in 2022. From 2023 to 2025, the Suzhou Archaeological Research Institute, the Archaeological Research Center of the National Cutural Heritage Administration and other units will form a joint archaeological team. After three rounds of active archaeological excavations, 2800 square meters will be excavated. The main remains of the site date back to the Songze Culture period to the Shang and Zhou Dynasties, with the Maqiao Culture "Houmaqiao Culture" remains being particularly distinctive. The 'Houmaqiao Culture' inherits the Maqiao Culture and initiates the Wuyue Culture. Tangbei Site in Suzhou, Shecheng Site in Wuxi and Pishan Site in Huzhou together form the central site group around the Taihu Lake Lake from late Shang Dynasty to early Zhou Dynasty. At present, it has been preliminarily discovered that there are three pre Qin settlement groups within the land area, namely Songze Plateau, Maqiao Plateau, and "Houmaqiao" Plateau. In the northern part of the plot, a basic settlement structure from the "Houmaqiao Culture" period has been preliminarily revealed, mainly consisting of terraces and trenches. There are not only living relics such as ash pits, water wells, and red clay, but also one tomb and two suspected heap kilns; Many ceramic and bronze artifacts have been unearthed. Among them, bronze tools such as copper arrowheads and copper axes have the characteristics of Yin Shang culture and are currently the earliest unearthed bronze tools in Suzhou area. The Tangbei Site, from the late Shang Dynasty to the early to mid Western Zhou Dynasty, basically reflects the cultural appearance of the 'Houmaqiao Culture' relics and is a representative site of the 'Houmaqiao Culture' period. ”Che Yafeng, the archaeological leader of Tangbei Site and deputy director of the Archaeology Department of Suzhou Archaeological Research Institute, introduced that although no high-level buildings or other relics have been found yet, compared with other sites from the "Houmaqiao Culture" period, the stratigraphic relationship of Tangbei Site is more clear and the combination of artifacts is more complete.
