Exploring the Cultural and Tourism Charm of the Millennium Porcelain Capital through the Dialogue of World Mayors

2025-10-27

Jingdezhen is not just a city, but also the spiritual home of world ceramics. "At the recent" World Mayor Dialogue Jingdezhen and 2025 Jingdezhen Forum, "Nurbayev Niyazbek, Vice Chairman of the Osh City Council in Kyrgyzstan, resonated widely on site. During the meeting, more than 350 guests, including mayors, cultural and business representatives from China, Italy, South Korea, Türkiye, Russia, Kyrgyzstan and other countries, held a round table dialogue on urban development and civilization integration around the theme of "porcelain shining for thousands of years, connecting the world". Several mayors have mentioned that the charm of a city lies in its irreplaceable personality, memories, and unique temperament. "The development of cultural tourism is not only to increase the number of tourists, but also to protect the spiritual core, cultural authenticity and aesthetic value of the city." Kagen Mohammed Usta, mayor of Iznik, Türkiye, said his view was thought-provoking. In his view, Iznik, as Türkiye's "Capital of Porcelain", although thousands of miles away from Jingdezhen, is closely linked by sharing cultural values. Jingdezhen did not confine ceramic culture in display cabinets, but integrated it into the urban fabric. From the protection of the old alleyway and kiln site in Taoyangli, to the creative rebirth of the old porcelain factory in Taoxichuan, from the cultural and tourism IP of "City of Thousand Museums" to the consumption ecology of "Night Pearl Mountain"... Tourists here have transformed from "looking at porcelain" to "living in the porcelain capital". Data shows that in 2024, Jingdezhen received over 60 million tourists, a year-on-year increase of 10.3%; During this year's National Day and Mid Autumn Festival holiday, Jingdezhen received over 9 million tourists, fully demonstrating the attractiveness of this city. Ceramics are the crystallization of civilization nurtured by water, fire, soil, and craftsmen. ”Former Mayor of Gwangju, South Korea, Kim Jong suk, expressed that the cultural, tourism, and artistic industries should enrich people's lives and contribute to urban development. This concept has been confirmed in Jingdezhen: ceramic culture is visible craftsmanship, tangible skills, and works that can be carried away. It not only carries the memory of the city, but also is a participatory and sustainable cultural resource. The thriving cultural and tourism industry has enhanced Jingdezhen's cultural soft power; And a higher level of openness has pushed it towards a new realm of mutual benefit and win-win outcomes. From the prosperity of ancient times where craftsmen came from all directions and crafts became the world, to today's pattern of "buying and selling globally", this city is building a more three-dimensional open bridge. At present, Jingdezhen has established friendly connections with more than 180 cities in 72 countries, and official ceramic flagship stores have been established overseas, gradually achieving a leap from "product going global" to "brand going global" and even "cultural going global". The choice of Jingdezhen for the "World Mayor Dialogue" is not accidental. Ceramics, as a "world language" that transcends borders and eras, naturally becomes an ideal medium for exploring urban governance and cultural exchange. The continuous interaction between cities such as Iznik, Türkiye and Jingdezhen confirms the civilization concept of "each beauty has its own beauty, and beauty is shared". At the end of the roundtable dialogue, Chen Kelong, the mayor of Jingdezhen City, invited the world with an ancient Chinese saying: "To make the kiln fire strong, we need to add firewood; to deepen our friendship, we need to walk frequently." Behind this sentence is the beginning of a long-term cooperation mediated by porcelain. The eternal flame of a thousand year kiln relies on generations of people continuously adding firewood; Civilization exchange is not limited, it stems from the open and inclusive mindset of each city. Jingdezhen has been praised by mayors from many countries not only for its glorious past, but also for contributing a "Jingdezhen answer" on cultural heritage and innovative development to many handicraft cities.
