Huangzhong Silver Bronze Ware in Qinghai Province: A Century Old Intangible Cultural Heritage Becomes a New Engine for Rural Development

In the late autumn season, in Yangpo Village, Lushar Town, Huangzhong District, Xining City, Qinghai Province, the wheat fields along the road have shed their green color. In a corner of the village, the sound of "jingling" could be heard - in the dozens of silver and bronze workshops of the Lushar ethnic handicraft processing base, craftsmen held tools and focused on their work, while fine silver shavings shone under the lights. Wang Fubang, 49 years old, is a representative inheritor of the national intangible cultural heritage project of silver and bronze ware production and gilding skills at the district level, and a provincial-level first level craftsman. His storefront is located in the first row of the base, which is a "front store and backyard" building. The base also has more than 10 small courtyards with similar layouts and more than 40 standalone workshops. In the front store shelves, finished silver and bronze handicrafts are neatly arranged with intricate and exquisite patterns. On the surface of the backyard studio, silver and copper billets were polished into various shapes, and Wang Fubang and his disciples were pounding them with chisels and small hammers in their hands. Everyone is rushing to make different orders, silver pots, silver bowls, jewelry, ornaments... The sound of 'ding ding dang dang' sounds from morning till night, and it's not just our family. ”Wang Fubang said that behind this lively scene is the century old inheritance and innovative development of "silver and bronze ware making and gilding skills" in Huangzhong. Look at Huangzhong for Qinghai silver and bronze ware, and look at Yangpo for Huangzhong silver and bronze ware. It is reported that the production and gilding techniques of silver and bronze ware have a history of over a hundred years in the local area. In 2011, it was listed in the third batch of national intangible cultural heritage. The process is complex, including more than ten core crafts such as silver smelting, embryo making, and chiseling. However, this century old intangible cultural heritage has encountered difficulties due to its "solo" business model, with unstable income for craftsmen and a younger generation choosing to work outside, posing a risk of "interruption" in the inheritance of skills. The promotion of the rural revitalization strategy has brought a turning point for the inheritance of intangible cultural heritage. In 2021, leveraging the opportunity of cooperation between the East and the West, Qixia District in Nanjing provided targeted support to Huangzhong District. Based on the advantages of local intangible cultural heritage resources, it invested in building the Lushar Ethnic Handicraft Processing Base. The base adopts the "stock cooperative+base+farmers" model, and has built a 97 acre industrial park, attracting more than 30 cooperative and individual households from Yangpo Village and surrounding areas to settle in. Among the more than 400 households in the village, nearly 40% of the villagers rely on this craft to increase their income and become rich, and many craftsmen from other places come to learn the craft. The development of industries has forced technological innovation and quietly changed the mode of inheritance. ”He Man, a national representative inheritor of silver and bronze ware production and gilding techniques, told reporters that in order to expand the popularity of local silver and bronze ware, he and other inheritors actively participate in various expos both inside and outside the province. Running around the country, six or seven suitcases of all sizes were damaged, "said He Man. The governments of Nanjing and Xining have also built a bridge for Huangzhong silver and bronze ware to reach the whole country by promoting the improvement of traditional craftsmanship quality and industrial standardization development, registering the "Yihehuang" public brand, and other means. In 2021, the annual output value of the silver and bronze handmade craft industry in the base exceeded 100 million yuan. In recent years, more and more young people have returned to their hometowns after completing their studies. Through the collision of communication and learning, craftsmen who used to rely on traditional market demand have transformed their thinking under the guidance of young craftsmen. New products such as copperware, titanium products, and ancient architectural aluminum tiles continue to emerge, and their creative works incorporate elements of local ecological culture, humanistic style, and so on. Good craftsmanship can withstand the test of time, and we hope that traditional skills and craftsmanship spirit can attract more young people to join, driving the comprehensive revitalization of rural areas through industrial revitalization. ”Wang Fubang told reporters that the orders scheduled for next year are already fully booked. Nowadays, this intangible cultural heritage technique is becoming a powerful driving force for rural development, shining with a unique brilliance on the plateau. (New Society)
