New Era China Research Tour: Cultural China | Dance Comes from Dunhuang

2025-11-05

With palm support, leg support, hips out, and hooked feet, one by one, flying dance moves gracefully appear. Rebound pipa and light dance with long silk, "there is stillness in motion, stillness in motion", showcasing the elegance of Eastern aesthetics. At the Gansu Song and Dance Theater, actors are rehearsing a new version of 'Silk Road Flower Rain'. Dunhuang dance is a dance inspired by the dance movements of Dunhuang murals. In 1979, the large-scale ethnic dance drama "Silk Road Flower Rain" emerged, systematically transforming the dance movements that had been frozen for thousands of years on Dunhuang murals into dynamic dance language for the first time. After its performance, it caused a sensation throughout the country and also created a new dance genre called "Dunhuang Dance". For over 40 years, the drama has been performed in more than 4000 shows, covering over 40 countries and regions. It is known as a milestone in Chinese dance drama and a living Dunhuang mural, a beautiful artistic enjoyment. The success of "Silk Road Flower Rain" gave birth to the establishment of the Dunhuang dance teaching system. At that time, dancer Gao Jinrong, who was teaching at Gansu Art School, introduced the mural dance posture system into the classroom and built a complete training curriculum from hand posture, arm posture to prop application, making Dunhuang dance an independent school that can be taught and learned, and cultivating numerous talents for the inheritance and development of this dance genre. Afterwards, a number of stage masterpieces such as "The Great Dream of Dunhuang", "Thousand Armed Guanyin", and "Step by Step Birth of Lotus" continued the glory of Dunhuang dance. Especially the Lanzhou Grand Theatre's production of 'The Great Dream of Dunhuang' has once again pushed Dunhuang dance to the world. Since its premiere in 2000, the play has performed over 2000 times and visited 23 countries and regions, making contributions to Dunhuang culture going global. Nowadays, Dunhuang dance has taken root on campus. Lanzhou University of Arts and Sciences, Northwest Normal University and other universities have successively offered professional courses, and young students continue the tradition through daily training, passing on this art from generation to generation. What's even more gratifying is that Dunhuang dance has integrated into daily life outside the classroom, shining with vitality in the rhythm of recess exercises and on the journey of summer trains. The flying sky in Mogao Grottoes has been dancing silently for thousands of years. Nowadays, they have "resurrected" in the dance moves of contemporary dancers, jumping onto the international stage and vividly telling the world about the openness and inclusiveness of Chinese civilization. This rainbow road paved by dance is constantly extending with the steps, leading to a future where each beauty is unique and shared. (New Society)
