The Zhongta Highway (also known as the Pamir Highway) was first built in the 1940s, starting from Dushanbe in the west and ending at the Karasu Port on the Zhongta border in the east, with a total length of over 1000 kilometers. It is of great significance for Tajikistan's logistics transportation and external exchanges. However, due to frequent natural disasters and long-term disrepair, a large number of sections of the original highway have been severely damaged. In 2009, the Zhongta Highway Reconstruction and Expansion Project, undertaken by China Road and Bridge Corporation (hereinafter referred to as "China Road and Bridge"), began implementation. In 2013, the first phase of the Zhongta Highway project was completed and accepted. President Rahmon praised the renovation of a new road to make residents' travel safer and personally awarded medals to Chinese worker representatives. In September 2022, the second phase of the Zhongta Highway project was launched, facing the severe challenges of the Pamir Plateau. In addition to severe weather conditions, the second phase project also faces even more dangerous geological conditions: the mountains are steep and the vertical drop is extremely large, and the geological conditions are mostly weathered shale. Many areas are prone to mudslides and landslides; The slope is steep, and the vertical distance between the highest excavation line and the road surface is as high as 76 meters. In addition, as this highway is the only land passage connecting China and Tajikistan, it is necessary to ensure both smooth traffic and uninterrupted construction... During the construction, the China Road and Bridge team carefully planned and scientifically constructed, building two tunnels, 14 bridges, and 5 open tunnels, and widening the road surface from the original 4 meters to 12 meters. The two tunnels are control projects, among which the 3388 meter long Tunnel 1 has been fully connected after more than two years of construction. President Rahmon praised this and directly named it the "Tajikistan Tunnel". The second phase of the Zhongta Highway project has a total length of 92.339 kilometers. After completion next year, the travel time will be reduced from the original 5 hours to 1.5 hours. ”Standing at the starting point of the project in Kalayihongm Village, Jiang Shulin, the production manager of the key section construction project of Zhongta Phase II, said. Meteors are transparent and hydrophobic, while moon moving clouds are retrograde. As night falls, the trucks that travel day and night converge into a long queue on the Zhongta Highway. The surging vitality of jointly building the "the Belt and Road" has made the wilderness of the mountain country no longer lonely. The wonderful story of the China Tajikistan community of shared destiny is constantly being written under the dome of the new era. (New Society)
