The development of 6G is not a one-step solution

At the "2025 6G Development Conference" held recently, "6G development is not a one-step process" became an industry consensus. This is a correction of some radical views, calibrating the cognitive coordinates for this future technology race. There are some impatient viewpoints within the industry. Some people say that 6G can skip the 5G-A stage and arrive in one step. In my opinion, this will cut off the technological evolution chain, leading to a lack of solid technological foundation for 6G; Some pursue standardization at once, but in my opinion, ignoring the dynamic development of technology and demand will solidify the technological roadmap and make it difficult to adapt to the needs of rapidly iterating technologies such as AI; Some people ignore the industrial value of 5G and are eager to fully deploy 6G networks. In my opinion, this will not only idle and waste existing 5G resources, but also cause problems such as the gap between old and new technologies, high costs, and disconnected applications. These views violate the laws of technology. The iteration of communication technology is a gradual process, and "one step at a time" not only slows down the pace of innovation, but may also lead to the dilemma of resource mismatch in industrial development. Opposing radicalism does not negate development. 6G is not just about 5G "+1", its data transmission rate can reach 10 to 100 times that of 5G, and its latency can be shortened to one tenth of 5G. It is far superior to 5G in peak speed, latency, and other aspects. From a technical perspective, 6G breaks communication boundaries and achieves global coverage through satellite ground fusion, deeply integrating communication, sensing, computing, and intelligence, enabling the network to have environmental perception and autonomous decision-making capabilities, thus supporting application scenarios such as digital twins and ultra large scale connections. From an industrial perspective, 6G will drive the development of upstream and downstream industrial chains such as chips, devices, application development, and system integration, promote the upgrading of existing 5G industrial foundations, and form a new trillion level industrial ecosystem. From a global perspective, 6G is the core track for global digital technology competition and future industries, and is crucial for enhancing national technological competitiveness. The research and development process of 6G technology reflects the inherent logic of "gradual development". China will launch 6G technology trials in three stages starting from 2022. The first stage is to clarify the main technical direction of 6G; In the second stage, develop 6G prototype for typical scenarios and performance indicators; The third phase involves developing pre commercial 6G equipment and conducting testing of key 6G products. We have now entered the second phase. During this process, the efficiency release of 5G remains a key cornerstone. Reasonably coordinating the development pace of 5G and 6G, promoting the continuous breakthrough of 5G in commercial deepening and technological maturity, can lay a solid foundation for the subsequent research and development and large-scale application of 6G, and form a good pattern of coordinated promotion of two generations of technology. Standard setting is a process of continuous evolution and upward mobility. The industry has formed a consensus that the first version of the 6G standard does not need to pursue comprehensive perfection, as long as it achieves significant improvements on the basis of existing 5G/5G-A, it already has milestone significance. At the same time, reserving development space for subsequent iterations in the early stage of system design can be considered as a success criterion. This pragmatic attitude is rooted in the historical experience of communication technology iteration - both 4G and 5G standards are constantly improved in subsequent versions based on technology and demand development, and it is also more in line with the complexity characteristics of 6G technology. The six major scenarios proposed by the International Telecommunication Union in 2023, as well as the standardization schedule outlined by 3GPP (Third Generation Partnership Project), form the practical foundation for the gradual "ascent" of 6G standards. The innovation and transformation of terminals are not achieved overnight. The integration and development of 6G and artificial intelligence will bring revolutionary opportunities to mobile terminals. But what is uncertain is that the development speed of artificial intelligence is beyond people's imagination, and the evolution of 6G terminals from traditional mobile phone forms to intelligent and multi form wearable devices may also present new paths with breakthroughs in AI technology. In addition, upgrades to in vehicle terminals rely on the deep integration of the automotive and communication industries, and cross domain collaboration of 6G terminals requires a lengthy process of technology adaptation, scenario validation, and cost optimization. Among China's over 300 key 6G technology reserves, there is a large amount of terminal related technology research and development, which aims to promote terminal form innovation through technological iteration and accumulation. As the world yearns for the new era of intelligent connectivity brought by 6G, it is even more important to maintain a clear understanding. Great innovation is never a momentary leap, but a long journey of continuous optimization and upgrading. Abandoning the impetuous mentality of "one step at a time", taking standard setting as the guide, terminal innovation as the lever, and integrating technology as the breakthrough, in order to accumulate advantages through continuous evolution, 6G can truly become a powerful engine supporting high-quality economic and social development.
