Artificial intelligence is becoming a new infrastructure for cultural heritage work
2025-11-24
On November 22, at the "2025 Beijing National Cultural Center Construction International Academic Seminar" hosted by Beijing Union University, Zhang Mengmeng, member of the Party Committee and Vice President of Beijing Union University, said, "We are more inclined to position artificial intelligence as a new type of infrastructure in cultural heritage work, rather than replacing the new protagonist of humanity. Technology should ultimately serve people, cultural inheritance and expression." The theme of this seminar is "Inheriting Millennium Cultural Heritage and Innovating Industry in the Era. Experts and scholars from different fields are jointly exploring how the millennium ancient capital can flourish in the digital age when the dual forces of technology and culture intersect. At the opening ceremony, Beijing Union University released the achievements of serving the construction of the National Cultural Center in Beijing during the 14th Five Year Plan period, including the Beijing University model. Zhou Chenghu, an academician of the CAS Member and a researcher of the Institute of Geographic Sciences and Resources of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, said that Beijing Studies takes Beijing as its research object and has distinctive local characteristics. Of course, Beijing Studies is not about studying any aspect of Beijing, nor is it simply listing various aspects, but about studying the urban complex composed of various elements and their environment in Beijing. Beijing studies research requires both traditional disciplinary methods and innovative modern scientific methods. For example, actively utilizing modern information technology, including new generation scientific technologies such as big data analysis and artificial intelligence, to enhance the scientificity and accuracy of research. Today we have entered an era of great scientific integration. ”Zhou Chenghu stated that the Peking University model is a multimodal model that couples language and professional models, attempting to transform the research paradigm of Peking University, improve research efficiency, and promote the deepening development of Peking University. Based on the model of Peking University, a series of applications such as intelligent document retrieval, interactive education applications, and text analysis tools can be developed. Looking ahead to the future, Zhou Chenghu stated that the further development of the Peking University model can promote the construction of Peking University data engineering, build a multimodal Peking University base model, and also create Peking University intelligent agents, achieving "great and extreme integration". In terms of management, the addition of AI can help form a new pattern of cultural heritage governance. Wu Yuhua, director of the Cultural Relics Protection Consulting Institute of the China Cultural Relics Information Consulting Center, said that in the protection of grotto temples in China, if the cultural relics department works alone, it will fall into a management dilemma of "small horses pulling big carts". He pointed out that the key to breaking the deadlock lies in building a "perceptible, controllable, and activatable" intelligent cultural heritage space, incorporating cultural relics resources into national land space and management. Specifically, it is necessary to use digitalization as a "technology engine" to construct a fully integrated, full cycle, and computable digital twin for grotto temples. Based on scientific analysis, establish a smart management red line and sensitive control line for grotto temples. Any proposed project near the sensitive control area of the grotto temple must first undergo vibration, visual, hydrological, and other impact simulations in a digital twin. Only after passing the evaluation can it be approved for implementation. The cultural relic impact assessment should be embedded in the project approval process for cross departmental business collaboration and data exchange. The digitalization work that has already been carried out can also be converted into value, develop the cloud gaming digital industry, and promote digital IP authorization and derivatives. From 'passive rescue' to 'active prevention', from 'departmental affairs' to' national governance ', from' extensive management 'to' precise governance ', this is a paradigm revolution. ”Wu Yuhua said. Zhang Mengmeng summarized and analyzed that AI can empower the protection and utilization of cultural heritage in five major areas: digital intelligence base, building high fidelity collection and a large database of Chinese culture; Intelligent protection, building a closed-loop system for cultural relic protection; Cognitive decoding: building a cultural brain that serves the public and experts; Creative activation, making cultural heritage easier to spread; Co governance and sharing, using data to break down departmental barriers and integrate strength. Zhang Mengmeng emphasized that AI has provided unprecedented new tools and perspectives for the protection and utilization of cultural heritage, promoting the transformation of protection work from labor-intensive to technology empowered. Seizing the opportunities of digital intelligence amidst challenges and risks, and jointly exploring a path of intelligent protection of cultural heritage with Chinese characteristics, is the shared mission of our generation of technology workers and cultural heritage protectors, "he said.
