Travel Italy tenor Gao Guangyuan: Building a bridge for cultural exchange between China and foreign countries, singing Chinese stories to the world
2025-11-25
In the wave of globalization, generations of Chinese youth have embarked on long journeys abroad to learn the essence of world civilization. This is not only a change in geographical location, but more importantly, a deep exchange between diverse cultures. When they return with the imprint of the world, how to integrate the knowledge they have learned into the development of the times has become their common mission. As a member of the group of returning overseas students, the Italian tenor singer Gao Guangyuan has composed a symphony about pursuing dreams, making choices, and dedicating himself with his voice that transcends mountains and seas. From a young boy playing saxophone in Shandong to an opera student studying in Italy; From singing loudly in the Italian opera house to preaching and teaching from a three foot podium in the Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area. Gao Guangyuan's artistic trajectory is also a path of returning to his homeland after achieving success on the world stage. On this road, there is an artistic pilgrimage, a lonely perseverance, and a firm determination to return home and a sincere dedication to serving the country. Gao Guangyuan's exploration from instrumental music to vocal music began with learning musical instruments. During his youth, he practiced saxophone day after day for seven years, laying a solid foundation in music theory and honing his endurance and perseverance. Someone once praised him as "full of musical talent", but he believed that he had accumulated a sense of rhythm, auditory sensitivity, and reverence for music through repeated training, and only by constantly accumulating can he reap rewards. During his studies of saxophone, Gao Guangyuan frequently performed and hosted on campus, gradually developing a confident and composed stage performance. And his connection with vocal music is attributed to an unexpected "guest appearance" - during a performance in high school, he "took on a mission" to guest star as a vocal actor. The control of breath and understanding of music accumulated through years of instrument training have endowed Gao Guangyuan's voice with good plasticity. And his music mentor also keenly captured his talent in vocal music. "Under the influence of the teacher, I had an idea - 'I want to learn singing,'" he recalled with a smile. "I didn't expect this friendly performance to open a new door for me." Although this was contrary to his family's desire for him to study broadcasting and hosting, once the seed of vocal music was awakened, it broke through the soil and was unstoppable. To develop towards a professional path, he needs clearer guidance. During his studies in Beijing, a teacher who had returned from studying in Italy pointed him in the right direction. In the teacher's lecture, Gao Guangyuan systematically understood for the first time the charm of opera, a comprehensive art that intertwines language and music. Therefore, Gao Guangyuan's learning goal shifted from broad "singing" to precise focus on "opera" and aspired to further his studies in Italy, the "hometown of opera". At that time, although his understanding of Italy was very vague, the path taken by his predecessors aroused infinite longing for the opera temple in his heart - he longed to go to that land in person and explore its mysteries. This means that he must complete multiple challenges and assessments within a year, not only mastering unfamiliar Italian, but also balancing the heavy high school workload in China, while preparing for high difficulty vocal professional repertoire. Time is tight, tasks are heavy, and pressure is high. He described it as a year of 'racing against time'. The determination to sacrifice himself, the trust of his parents to take a risk, and the guidance from his mentor, these three forces converged and ultimately helped the 18-year-old fly to a broader world stage, opening a new stage in his life. After setting foot on Italian soil in 2010, Gao Guangyuan seemed to have entered a new world where art and life blended seamlessly. He found that opera is not a neglected art form in Italy, but rather a cultural gene integrated into the daily lives of Italians. He sighed, "Opera is reflected in every aspect of their lives, even the way they hold their glasses is closely related to the expression of opera." But to truly enter the world of opera, language is an unavoidable hurdle. In order to integrate into the local environment as soon as possible, he set a unique way for himself to practice the language - "speak out loud and learn Italian with a mindset of not afraid of making mistakes". So, in his daily life, on campus, from classrooms to streets, from classmates to neighbors, he seized every opportunity to practice Italian. The "jokes" made when he first arrived eventually helped him master the language of opera step by step. The challenges on the road to studying abroad, in addition to language differences, technical difficulties, and cultural barriers, are the most frustrating being the loneliness of being in a foreign land. He said, "Caring for the motherland and hometown is the norm. For international students, the real test is that they can only solve and digest problems on their own. For me, the biggest gain from studying abroad is not only professional knowledge, but also rapid spiritual growth." These experiences have also given him a deeper understanding of life and opera. After overcoming the initial discomfort of studying abroad, Gao Guangyuan's path of studying opera gradually entered a favorable stage. He completed four years of undergraduate studies at the Royal Academy of Music in Parma, Italy, and then enrolled in the Ferrara Conservatory for three years, ultimately pursuing a doctoral degree in opera studies. During this period, he studied under renowned Italian tenor singers and vocal educators such as Angelo Loforese, Giuliana Panza, William Matteuzzi, and other world-class masters, systematically studying the Western vocal system and opera tradition. At the same time, his figure began to frequently appear on the opera stage, playing important roles in classic operas such as "The Courtesan" and "The Lady of Camellias", transforming what he learned in class into stage practice. During his undergraduate years, Gao Guangyuan's performance experience left a deep impression on him. After his performance at a small opera house, the theater director invited all performers to leave their names on the signed book. When Gao Guangyuan looked through it, he found that there were many signatures of famous opera masters today. They performed here decades ago, and now I am writing my name in the same notebook. At that moment, I seemed to have had a dialogue with these predecessors in the opera industry that transcends time and space. In this moment, Gao Guangyuan felt the importance of artistic inheritance. The shock of the intersection of time and space planted a seed in his heart - one day, he will stand on the world stage as a Chinese singer, let the world know that China also has excellent singers, and let the world hear China's voice. Exploring the Ideal of Education in the Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area Since the release of the "Outline of the Development Plan for the Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area", the construction of this hot land has been advancing rapidly, accelerating towards becoming an international first-class bay area and world-class urban agglomeration, forming a strong "gravitational field" that attracts global attention and top talents. Although he has been studying and living in Italy for over ten years, the idea of returning to his homeland for development has never been extinguished in Gao Guangyuan's heart. Around 2022, after considering the international situation and personal development plan, he made the decision to return to China. The Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area is my first choice for future career development, "he said without hiding his expectations for this hot land." The construction of the Greater Bay Area is at the forefront of our country, and all industries are flourishing. "Here, he felt the diverse development paths, pioneering spirit, and surging innovation vitality. Afterwards, he entered the Xinghai Conservatory of Music and became a young teacher in the vocal opera department. The transformation of identity from a singer active on the international stage to a teacher of the people who cultivates future singers in China has brought Gao Guangyuan a new experience of both challenges and achievements. How to make students truly understand that opera is a "performance" rather than just a "singing" has become the core topic in his teaching. He found that some students are more concerned about "low pitch", but do not pay enough attention to core content such as character development and theatrical understanding in opera. To this end, he introduced the experience he accumulated during his studies in Italy into the classroom and attempted to use "theatrical teaching" to help students establish a comprehensive understanding of opera. Through the composer and historical background, to the script story, character relationships, stage scheduling, performance details, etc., students can understand opera in practice. Gao Guangyuan frankly stated that the ideal teaching model faces multiple challenges in reality. For example, in Italy, opera production is usually completed by the director, stage designer, vocal director, and other professionals working together, but now he needs to complete it independently. From exploring the composer's background, plot and story, to preparing costumes, stage design, and band, he did everything meticulously and personally. Although cumbersome, he believes that this is a necessary stage in promoting the development of opera education towards higher quality. Under his cultivation, opera gradually became known to more people and brought him an unparalleled sense of achievement and satisfaction. In 2024, the Rossini opera "Mr. Bruschino" directed by Gao Guangyuan was successfully performed, which was not only his first complete answer sheet after returning to China, but also a successful practice of his teaching philosophy. This is my challenge, but it is also where my passion lies. "Today, he is actively promoting the development of Chinese original opera. He and his students actively rehearsed original operas "The Cotton Tree" and "Huang Feihong", telling Chinese stories in the form of Western operas and conveying the energy of patriotism. And his sense of achievement comes not only from the applause of the audience, but also from the fragrance of peaches and plums. He said with satisfaction, "Recently, many of my students have chosen to go abroad to study. From performing abroad in the past to seeing students from various voices find their future directions, this sense of happiness is my biggest gain. I also hope that they can apply their knowledge to the development of the new era in the future." While deeply cultivating the teaching front line, Gao Guangyuan also has his own thoughts on the future development of Chinese opera and music education. He believes that the cultivation of art among primary and secondary school students should be integrated into basic education. Only by laying a solid foundation in social aesthetics can higher music education cultivate artistic talents with a more international perspective and profound cultural heritage on this basis. He deeply understands that education is not only about imparting skills, but also about igniting the flame, allowing students to calibrate their life direction, find their own artistic path and cultural coordinates. Singing the voice of Chinese culture on the world stage is not only the bloodline and spiritual totem of a nation, but also an important foundation for standing among the world's nations. As General Secretary Xi Jinping pointed out, "Without a high level of cultural confidence and the prosperity and flourishing of culture, there can be no great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation." Strengthening confidence in the path, theory, and system of socialism with Chinese characteristics ultimately means strengthening cultural confidence. Long term cross-cultural communication experience has given Gao Guangyuan a more concrete understanding of cultural confidence. He said, "I have always believed that we Chinese people should be very confident! We are such a hardworking nation with a long civilization." Therefore, he believes that "our mentality needs to change, and we need to show the unique charm of Chinese culture to the world with a more open and confident attitude." Gao Guangyuan's participation in the "75th Anniversary Concert of the founding of the People's Republic of China" and his experience living and performing in Italy have allowed him to personally experience the cultural symbolic significance carried by music. In his view, music is the language of the world, and every Chinese singer who performs on stage overseas is a cultural ambassador representing the voice of China, showcasing it in their own unique way
