Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao join hands to achieve the 'Green All Round Movement'

Revitalize existing facilities to avoid being idle after the competition; Make good use of technological means and collaborate to participate in carbon reduction; Improving supporting services and implementing environmental policies... The 15th National Games (hereinafter referred to as the "15th Games") recently concluded in the Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area. Adhering to the concept of "green, sharing, openness, and integrity", the 15th National Games is committed to creating a "carbon neutral" event through systematic innovation and practice. The Guangzhou Tianhe Sports Center Stadium, which has a history of nearly 40 years, has hosted the 6th and 9th National Games. Prior to the 15th National Games, Guangzhou Tianhe Sports Center underwent a low-carbon transformation, becoming the first large-scale sports venue renovation project in China to achieve near zero carbon emissions. It is responsible for hosting events such as the women's U16 football, men's U18 volleyball, and three player basketball finals. Venue construction is a key link in reducing carbon emissions for sporting events. In this year's National Games, Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao will fully utilize existing venue resources, avoid carbon emissions from new construction projects, and carry out green upgrading and renovation of existing venues. More than 90% of the venues in the Guangdong competition area are renovated and upgraded using existing venues, without building new athlete villages; The Hong Kong competition area adheres to the principle of "utilizing existing venues, market-oriented operation, and not disturbing the public", and uses existing venues such as Kai Tak Sports Park, Hong Kong Cycling Center, and Fanling Golf Course to hold 8 competition events and 1 public event; In addition to using the venues of the Sports Bureau of the Special Administrative Region Government, the competitions in the Macau region will also be held using the venues and facilities of local universities, comprehensive vacation and leisure enterprises. It is worth mentioning that the low-carbon practice of the 15th National Games does not stop at the "event period", but also pays attention to "post event use", which ensures that the venues can continue to serve urban development and the national fitness industry, avoiding the resource waste dilemma of "idle venues after the event ends". For example, after the competition, the Longhua Cultural and Sports Center in Shenzhen will be open to the public and become a comprehensive space for cultural and sports activities. The climbing venue of Guangzhou University City Sports Center will be transformed into a youth climbing base, truly realizing the concept of "shared by all" competition. By utilizing technological means, the rainwater collection system equipped in the main venue and youth sports field can collect, store, and filter rainwater, which can be used to irrigate the lawn of the field after treatment; More than 10% of the roof area is covered with solar panels to provide hot water and electricity... As the largest sports infrastructure project in Hong Kong, the Kai Tak Sports Park, which was put into operation earlier this year, hosted events such as handball (men's) and rugby sevens at this year's National Games. Deng Jingcheng, Director of Strategic Development at Kai Tak Sports Park, stated that while striving to create a comfortable environment, the park will integrate sustainable development concepts into the details of venue design and operation. In addition to revitalizing existing venues, during the 15th National Games, most venues in Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao will also implement low-carbon policies by introducing energy-saving and environmentally friendly materials, efficient mechanical and electrical equipment, smart lighting systems, and multi scenario distributed photovoltaics. At the Guangdong Olympic Sports Center, the venue for the opening ceremony of the 15th National Games, the construction team demolished the originally closed glass curtain wall of the stadium and transformed it into an elevated and ventilated national fitness platform, using fan assisted natural ventilation; The newly added horizontal eaves and the existing ribbon shaped roof truss form a shading system, reducing the heat caused by direct sunlight. At the Macau Tower Sports Center, the glass and aluminum exterior walls of the venue are designed with natural lighting to provide ample light and transparency for the venue; The newly installed solar photovoltaic panels and energy-saving lighting systems can help reduce carbon emissions by 30% during the use of the venue. The electric cooling coating technology developed in Hong Kong can effectively reduce the surface temperature of buildings. After being used in venues in the Hong Kong region, this technology has been further promoted to the Guangdong region, reflecting the synergistic effect of "Hong Kong research and development, Guangdong transformation" in production and research. The single windbreaker, long pants, and other items in the competition uniform are made of environmentally friendly materials to improve the supporting services; All meal boxes used for group meals at venues in Guangzhou are made of biodegradable materials; Dongguan achieves full electronic coverage of event preparation, reducing the circulation of paper documents and resource consumption; Qide Sports Park fully adopts biodegradable paper cups and wooden tableware that have been certified for environmental protection... During the 15th National Games, in addition to the renovation and operation of the competition venues, relevant departments in each competition area, together with enterprises and the public, took various measures to fully implement environmental policies and help achieve the "Green Games". In terms of sports transportation, the Guangzhou competition area has deployed over 800 pure electric vehicles, and the green network of subways, buses, and shared bicycles covers Yangcheng. The proportion of green travel in the central urban area exceeds 77%; The Hong Kong and Macau regions have also provided convenient green travel options for audiences and tourists through the use of new energy sports vehicles and optimization of public transportation routes. In terms of public participation, the Director of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government's Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau, Rosamund Law, stated that during the 15th National Games, the Hong Kong Regional Coordination Office formulated the "Public Low Carbon Action Guidelines" and set up related exhibitions and interactive installations to allow citizens to personally experience how large-scale sports events implement carbon neutrality concepts, spread the "green" concept, and encourage the public to actively practice low-carbon living. In terms of carbon management, the Shenzhen competition area has innovatively launched a large-scale event carbon emission accounting system, realizing the full process management of "pre competition calculation, in competition accounting, and post competition recalculation". Four leading companies in Shenzhen donated 100000 tons of carbon assets at once to address the remaining emissions after accounting. The competition area also encourages citizens to record low-carbon behaviors, accumulate carbon credits, and voluntarily donate through the "Zero Carbon Full Movement" mini program, forming a carbon neutral closed loop of "enterprise leadership and public participation".
