The Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage ("the Committee") of UNESCO held its 20th regular session in New Delhi on the 11th, and after evaluation, decided to transfer China's "Hezhe Imakan" from the Urgent Safeguarding List of Intangible Cultural Heritage ("the Urgent Safeguarding List") to the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity ("the Representative List"). At the same time, based on the conservation effectiveness of the heritage project, the committee has decided to select the 'Hezhe Imakan' Conservation Plan 'into the list of excellent conservation practices. This is another urgently needed protection project in China that has been successfully included in the Representative Works List, following the successful transfer of three heritage projects including "Li Ethnic Traditional Textile Dyeing, Weaving and Embroidery Techniques" in 2024. It is also the first time that both the transfer and inclusion in the Excellent Protection Practice List have been successfully achieved. The "Hezhe Imakan" is a long-standing oral tradition passed down from generation to generation among the Hezhe people. It is narrated in Hezhe language and sung in a scattered rhyme and rhythm style, carrying the national history, heroic stories, fishing and hunting life, etiquette and customs, moral norms, etc. of the Hezhe people. It plays a role in recording history, educating future generations, and entertaining life. Since its inclusion in the Urgent Protection List in 2011, various actors centered around the community have actively collaborated, with inheritors, social groups, research and education institutions, intangible cultural heritage protection centers, and governments at all levels leveraging their respective strengths and taking coordinated actions. As a result, the intergenerational inheritance vitality and visibility of this heritage project have been continuously enhanced. In December 2023, when submitting the third periodic report on the protection status of the heritage project to UNESCO, China also submitted an application to include the heritage project in the Representative List. The committee has reviewed and approved the third periodic report of the heritage project at its 19th regular session in December 2024, fully recognizing the efforts made by China to protect the heritage project, and encouraging the continued promotion of its practice and inheritance, ensuring community participation in implementing protection measures. At this point, the total number of projects listed in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List and Roster has increased to 45, of which 40 are listed as representative works, 3 are listed as urgently needed for protection, and 2 are listed as excellent protection practices.
