China has concluded nearly 100000 maritime cases in three years, covering 143 countries and confiscating and auctioning nearly 4000 ships

On December 18th, the reporter learned from the Supreme People's Court that from 2022 to 2024, the three levels of maritime trial courts in China accepted 98726 cases of various types of maritime commerce, maritime administration, maritime criminal and maritime enforcement, and concluded 97140 cases. On the same day, the Supreme People's Court released the bilingual "China Maritime Trial (2022-2024)" (hereinafter referred to as the "Report"), which comprehensively summarized the situation of the three levels of maritime trial courts in China serving to ensure the construction of a maritime power and high-level opening up to the outside world over the past three years, and creating a preferred place for international maritime dispute resolution. According to the report, from 2022 to 2024, the third level maritime trial courts in China accepted 71705 maritime and commercial cases and closed 70759 cases; Received 5477 maritime administrative cases and closed 5482 cases; 185 maritime criminal cases were accepted and 193 were closed. Six maritime courts have piloted the acceptance of 95 first instance maritime criminal cases and closed 102 cases, including 57 in Haikou Maritime Court, 41 in Ningbo Maritime Court, and 1 each in Nanjing, Qingdao, Xiamen, and Guangzhou Maritime Courts. According to the report, from 2022 to 2024, the three levels of maritime courts in China accepted a total of 6823 foreign-related cases and 1226 cases involving Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan, and concluded 6071 foreign-related cases and 1134 cases involving Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan. Among them, eleven maritime courts accepted 6534 foreign-related cases and 1129 cases involving Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan in the first instance; 5851 foreign-related cases and 1055 cases involving Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan were concluded. The case involves 143 countries and regions. From 2022 to 2024, eleven maritime courts seized 2592 ships, including 49 foreign ships and 6 ships of Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan nationality. 1376 ships were auctioned, including 13 foreign ships and 2 ships from Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan. The report points out that 2024 marks the 40th anniversary of the establishment of maritime courts in China. The maritime trials of the people's courts have grown from scratch and from weakness to strength, achieving all-round development and historic achievements. The People's Court has established 11 maritime courts and 42 dispatched courts, forming a "three-level court, two instance, and final appeal" maritime trial system with cross administrative jurisdiction, covering all sea areas, navigable waters, and ports in China; The scope of cases accepted has increased from 18 to 108, with the types of cases mainly focused on shipping, commerce, civil and commercial cases, and expanded to include maritime civil, administrative and some criminal fields such as maritime rights, maritime economy and maritime protection. The report points out that China has become the country with the most complete judicial system, the largest number of cases, and the most diverse types of cases in the world. (New Society)
